SMTA timing advance or retard

Hi all,I have a SMTA that is used for antique tractor pulls and is stock 262 cid running 145# of compression. I installed a pertronix ignition and flame thrower coil and am using autolite 3116 plugs gapped @.042.
My question is to set the timing advanced or retarded or dead centered using a inductive timing light. Thanks Paul.

well with out knowing what curve the dist has i can not say fopr sure , but when i set one up on the dist machine i like to have the curb timing at plus 5 at ideal and a total at full throttle Plus 27 degrees . as the will lug better .

Tractor vet, when looking at the pointer with the timing light would that be clockwise or counter clockwise to set @ +5 curb or +27 full throttle,my guess would be clockwise

When your standing there at the ft. of the tractor the timing marks will be coming at ya and the first ones will be advance And you will not be able to get the set that i get because i make changes INSIDE the dist. , SOOOooooooo if ya can get TDC at ideal and 27 at full throttle she will be pretty good .

International Harvester paid a group of engineers a fortune to determine optimum timing for their tractors. I am always amused that someone comes in out of the weeds and knows so much more than the engineers that designed the machines!

And the rest of us here on the forum are always amused at your posts, Tom 43. You rarely, if ever, have a kind-spirited, helpful post on any topic. Your posts are always very predictable in nature - that is, negative and mean-spirited. mike

He never should have used the "R" word in his topic...always seems to draw you out of the woodwork. Now whimper your way over to site comments and get me censored, as usual.

do you think tom is trying to reach out to someone? your right his posts are pedictable, and he is not endearing himself to no one sad.....al

Depends on what your idea of optimum timing is. They set the timing for a tractor to run all day under heavy load, not make a single 1 minute pull down a track with a plenty of cool down time between runs.

teach, looked what you stepped in.

These tractors were built over 50 years ago with engineering that is just as old. I have to believe that there is more up to date knowledge about ignition systems and fuel systems out there to be utilized. Look at the high performance equipment put out by the Big 3 in the 60's and early 70's that was advanced beyond what came down the assembly line for your run of the mill mom and pop grocery getter. Were the engineers at teh Big 3 less qualified than those of IH?

Think about the Hayes Dual Point Distributor for the Fords of that era. Oh, wait, sorry to confuse you, I believe you were the one that was stumped by a mid 60's Mustang distributor. Sorry for going over your head teach. Stick with the 2 cylinder Deere's, they're only half as complicated. Anyway, I'm just picking on you to make a point, 50 year old technology can be improved upon.

BTW, recurving and changing the advance the distributor when I had my Mustang 30 years ago really woke it up.

I thought mine was really retarded, not advanced. I didn't set it myself, I had a long time puller help me out. It does not start easily, but it sure does lug! People can't believe how much power it has.

I bet the one d-bag still runs ND SAE 30 in his hydraulics. I can just hear it, "They didn't run hytran back then so it can't be the right thing...Do you think you are smarter than a bunch of dead engineers!?!"
