I cam across a 1941 M s/n 30655 X5. My reference book says the X is for a : High Speed Low & Reverse Attachment. Not sure what the 5 stands for. Is this high low option a good thing or is it as we say in Montana " All hat and no cows" ?

The X5 = 5000' high altitude pistons.

The X in this case does not stand for high or low gear The X your refering to was used in latter models after about 1952ish or so. If you have Guy Fays Data book it has all the codes lised, Early and late ones.
