I recently bought a 1086 and so far have only used it to plow snow. The govenor don"t seem to be working at all, when it starts pulling a little, like going up a hill I have to give it more gas to keep it from dying. Is there an easy way to check it out ? There is a box like cover on top of govenor, if I take this off will I be able to see anything that could be the problem ? I would appreciate any help you can give me. I really like this tractor but this is something that"s got to be fixed. It"s worrisome.

At what rpm are you talking about. The gov action on these models is next to nill at say below 1200 rpm. Notice how it doesn't smoke black much when it is idleing and you open the throttle, due to the walking beam type gov internal linkage. This can be mostly overcome with internal adjustments but these would best be done on a test bench or hooked to a dynamometer. It requires adjusting the droop screw and or cam nose angle. Of course, your governor may be worn out if it doesn't have good response at higher rpms.
