Super MTA engine overhaul

Restoring engine on a 1954 Super MTA. The front main seal that came in the kit is half the width of the odd one. It is the same diameter but not as thick in debth. The kit included a felt round peice that I am guessing it is part of this front seal. I was thinking the seal needs to be flush with the outside and place the felt peice on inside. ANY HELP. Thanks.
 
Forget the felt, for sure don't put in on inside. Position the seal so it will ride on a good surface on pulley with lip toward engine. Original seal had a felt incorporated in a double seal arrangemt and actually had the leather lip seal lip toward outside. Not sure of your gasket set, but some contain the felt for the water pump.
 
Thanks Pete. Do you have any recomendations on where I can get a good shop manual on determing where these felt gaskets should go?

Just writing in to agree, most of the seals now days are thinner than the old ones. They ditched the felt and leather for materials that seal better.
 
You know what, the manual probably won't even tell you. The water pump has one between pulley and housing and rear crankshaft seal is two half moon felts. If you have (two) full round ones no doubt the one was intended for the front seal but like I said you don't want it with the new style seals. Tractor supply usually has I T Manuals, Jensales has photo copies and CaseIH dealer can order one also. This site sells manuals .
 
Does anyone have a breakdown on the front of the engine.How it comes apart and goes back together. {pitchures}
