IH engine inter change.

Looking at a crawler with a IH engine in it. It starts on gas and runs on diesal. Is there a diesal engin I can put in this machine. Without doing a lot of changes. Also what HP ranges did was this engine made in.

Crawlers would be TD6, TD9, TD14, TD15, TD18, and TD24. I don't know if the TD20 ever used a gas start diesel. Replace the T with a U for the power series units.

TD6 is the same as the MD and WD6 series. TD9 is the same series as the WD9.

The TD 14 and TD15 are larger four cylinder engines that were not used in ag tractors. TD 18 and TD 24 are six cylinder engines.

The TD40 and TD35 are earlier tractors built in the '30s. The WD40 was the same series as the TD40.

What you are saying is a ag motor will not fit. I'm looking at buying the machine and don't want to stick a lot of money in to it. It has good tracks and new steer clutchs. What are cheap options. I believe the machine is a Haugh with a IH motor. Looks like most of the gas starting parts are in need of repair

If the gas start diesel is scaring you off, you'd be much better off looking for a newer machine.

Regardless of which crawler it is, though, I'm pretty sure that there's no easy bolt-in diesel engine for it. Anything you put in will require extensive modification. By the time all is said and done you'll have more in it than if you went out and purchased a newer dozer.

Same thoughts here as well.

The TD20 Early models all were diesel run Gas start.
The TD9 engine and smaller will have compatibility with specific Ag wheeled tractors. Jim

If you like the unit and the engine appears in good condition, do not be afraid of the gasoline start diesel run engine. There are 10000's of them and as long as you follow the proper steps to start and to shut down it is not a major inconvenience. Before you try to start or run the unit get the written instructions on start up and shut down proceedures. Understand that you will have to maintain a gasoline side that includes a carburator.

Dave,

Hough never made crawlers. If it is a TD-?crawler it is a International made by IHC. TD-6 had same engine as MD and WD-6 tractors. TD-9 had same engine as WD-9 tractor. Gas start IHC diesels are excellent engines if handled right.

Check engine bay size - a 560 diesel and later family may fit and bolt up to transmission. 560 straight diesel replaced the gas start MD, 400/450D engines- bolted to same transmisions, back of engine bolt pattern same.this would handle TD6 and couple other numbers. Older brother ran across this swap when he was pushing cats years back, noticed engine was same as fathers 560 tractor and asked- was told swap was done because straight diesel was available cheaper and wasn't subject to as much abuse by student operators that didn't shut off earlier engine on gas setting and then messed up worse on restarting. Filters in box in construction shop did fit dads tractor;^). RN
