I just purchased a "48M. The price was right, couldn"t turn it down. The previous owner seems to think it has a stroker crank in it.

So here is the question. How to tell without tearing it apart. What are the normal compression numbers and what may I expect if it has been stroked?

He can"t get it started on 6 volts, but I lean more towards cable issues for that.

I"m driving it home this morning....should be fun 11 degrees here in NH this morning :)

Thanks in advance,

Stumpy

You should be able to check displacement like you check compression, but I am not positive. They can check diesel pulling tractors w/o tearing them down so I would guess you could check this as well.

If you have a race track close, they probably have an instrument to "puff" engines for displacement... not sure what it's called. Gotta' disconnect the rockers if I recall right.

Bring that tractor into the 21st. century by upgrading it to 12 volts. You will never regret the upgrade it. Use it and enjoy!!!! Armand

Which town in NH are you in? If you see any other great deals on tractors let me know. I'm in Derry. Have 17 right now. Enjoy your M , I've had A B C H and Cubs but no M yet.

Pull a plug (any) put a piece of copper wire in the hole (one foot long) turn engine slowly and mark the wire where it stops going down, and where it stops going up. Measure! Bore increase is not checked this way, but if you are pulling the tractor, it will be apart pretty soon, so measure it then. JimN

J Wilbur,

I have about 17 IH's too. 7 SMTA's if you want one. I am about 30 miles away in Tewksbury, MA.

What slavage yards do you go to?

Duh! I didn't think of that. Thanks for the idea. I'll get it done the next time I get to work on the tractor.

Thanks

Not for me, but I can appreciate your advice. I am just as stubborn as a mule. She'll run on six LOL!

I don't go to salvage yards, I either part out some and take what I need for parts or I buy off Ebay. Before I buy another tractor I should probably sell off a few to make the wife happy. My dad lives in Tewksbury on East streeet right down the street from the Market Basket warehouse.. Next time I go I should check out your collection. Could I get your email address? And if you need any parts for a Cub A B or C just check with me I may have what you need. Joe

Stumpy,

No, I didn't go to the IH Dublin show, just the regular show several weeks later. I waited till Sunday to avoid the torrential rain. I skipped the IH show as I figured there wouldn't be much more to see than what was displayed at Pepperel, MA. From what I have heard, that was probably a mistake.

The only shingle mill I have seen working was John Dupree's mill powered with his M. That was at Sleepy Hollow. I am surprised that John still has all his fingers. Are both you guys using the same mill?

Yes, I was at the Dublin IH show. Didn't get much time to look around though. I was up by the entrance selling tractor parts with my 2 daughters. I sold alot more stuff than I thought I would. Wish I could have spent a couple hours looking around. Maybe this year if they have it again. P.S. what is a shingle mill? Joe

J Wilbur,

wardner at peoplepc dot com.

I am next door to the antique Baptist Church on Andover Street. Exit 39 on I-495.

Never been interested in A, B, or C. I do have a Cub but it came with the farm when purchased in 1952. I no longer use it. Too fragile.

J Wilbur,

A shingle mill rip saws tapered shingles as used on house siding or roofing. The carriage teetter-totters so that each successive cut has an opposite taper. IIRC the circular blade is around 5' in diameter. It's an OSHA nightmare.

I don't really use the tractors I just like to get them up and going. Hobby for me. I however do you use my IH 424 with loader all the time. What other Ih's do you have. Me 1 Cub LoBoy, 2 Cubs, 1 SA, 1 BN, WF Hebard shop mule, Case SC, Case VAI, 2 JD M's, JD 40, JD H, 2 Ford 8N's, Massey Harris 30, AC WD, IH 424, and Ford 1900 plus a couple partial tractors. In the past 3 years i've probably had 50+ tractors. Just keep trading, selling, and buying it must be a disease. Joe

No, I don't even know the fella that had the mill. My H won't show so it had to do make something go! LOL! It was good. I have also run a mill at the Greenfield Harness and Drawbar show. That one belongs to Mel Rossi.
