H-4 Magneto Coil

How is the steel core removed from the center of the magneto coil? I didn't want to get real rough with a big hammer, but it is in side the coil pretty solid. I want to replace the coil, since it has been exposed to the weather for years. The cover was broken off.

If the coil is bad, I would soak it in penetrating oil for a day or two, then use a brass punch to drive it out. You don't want to damage the tapped holes on the ends. The core fits pretty tight. Or use a press.

find a socket slightly smaller than the diameter of the bar. With your vice open slightly wider than the bar drive the bar out with the coil resting on top of the jaws. works real well.

Although the core LOOKS solid, it is a stack of laminations riveted together and ground nice and round and finished on the ends.

If you get at ALL rough with it, it will be ruined. (Don't ask me how I know this!)

If you are certain the coil is bad, better to hack up the coil, then clean up the tar residue with solvent than to try to force it out and ruin the core.

Thanks, I knew there was smarter people out there, than the farmmule !!!!!! I'll put all of your suggestions to use as soon as the weather breaks, again thanks
