I was under the H today looking at the belly pump and noticed that there are only four (count 'em, four) bolts holding the oil pan to the block. There are fourteen or fifteen empty holes, I believe. I assume that somewhere in the world there is a little pile of bolts that are now without a home. I don't dare to take any of the four out to see what size it is, so I am hoping someone on here will know the length and diameter and maybe grade. I'll be going into town tomorrow and I'd like to get some if I can. Thanks very much for any information.

They are 5/16 X 7/8 (one inch will work)And I think there are a couple slightly longer. But I'd be wondering why they are out. Have you been driving the tractor? Might be some unfinished business under there.

Yep as Cowman said but you can also use 5/16X1/2 inch in most. I would take the time to clean out all those holes with a tap to make sure they are in fact empty since some one may have gotten a little carried away and broke a bunch of them off in the holes and if that has happened it means you will most likely need to drop the pan to pull them out

I just had the pan off our C last fall and I think there were 2 longer ones in the front and back, seem to hold in a seal holder? I would screw in a piece of 5/16 all thread to check the lenth.

Zachary, I looked at my H parts catalog and there are (18) total. (16) are 5/16" - 18 NC X 7/8" long and (2) are 5/16" - 18 NC X 1 1/8" long. All are noted as requiring an external tooth lock washer or a spring tooth lock washer. Type of washers are optional in the catalog, hopes this helps, Hal.

Thank you all very much. I'm off to town to get the bolts. I have driven it a couple of times, and it seems okay. It looks to me like someone had the pan down for some reason and then never put all the bolts back in because the four that are there are evenly spaced around the pan. I'll write again when I know what the deal is.
