M Water Pump Rebuild Help

This is going to be hard to explain,, but here goes.
Helping my neighbor with his Super M rebuild and have the water pump apart.
The piece where the large nut goes onto the bigger shaft had no clearance to put a socket on it, so we pried up the water pump bearing retainer and the seal came off the bottom allowing the piece to come up over the nut.

Now going back together, there is no way to tighten the nut while the seal is in the water pump bearing retainer. This pump also has 2 spacers that go onto the retainer that I don't see in the parts book.

If we flip over the retainer, there is enough room to get a socket on it, but it does not seem to go down far enough.

Are we missing something here? Is there a special tool to use to tighten the nut? I am talking about the large nut, not the packing nut.

I could use some good photos to look at.

If this is not enough info, I will try and get some pics posted.
I found a pic, thanks Joe

Thanks!

I ran across those same two spacers on a Farmall 400 water pump, I still don't know why they are there. I ended up tightening the nut with a hammer and punch.

randy!!! where ya been hiding at ??? havent heard from you in a while. looking at the nut, figure what size socket it will take and then zip on down to your local napa and get a 4 wheel drive spindle nut wrench. it should get right in there, if need be you can grind the tangs down on the socket a little to get in there.. heres a link to what you are looking for. they are used to remove the spindle nuts on the 4wd front hubs.
poke here

Spacers are to move fan forward to clear a power steering pump belt. There isn't much nut showing but it seems to me I just use a big old crescent (adjustable) wrench.

Nut shouldn't be that far inside. If there's more than one ring forward of the threads for belt adjustment pulley half. It has or has had a power steering pump drive pulley added in front of the crankshaft pulley, if other spacers are there. That was to move the fan forward for clearance. Regular impeller drive studs don't work with the spacers. Longer bolts with sleeves were used. If thats not the problem something is worn or missing.

Randy, I am with Kevin! I just did mine and was able to get a socket on it. The lip on my space was facing in not out. I think yours was put togther backwards last time. and I belive the space can come off over the nut so you can get to it. oldiron29

There is a power steering pump, that makes sense for the spacers.
So the nut should not be that far down into the plate so you can get a wrench on it?

Randy

Right, the spacers can stick togeather. They should come loose from the bearing retainer and can be installed after the nut is on. Make shore there's a smaller spacer between nut and front hub bearing. It may be stuck in the bearing retainer.
