Does anybody have a clue why there is an extra 3 plus inch hole in the hood of this SAV? The hood has a very faded marking on one side that shows an "AV" where it should be. The "super" part I have not been able to make out but my point is that the hood came off an A of some sort. The picture shows the breather and the exhaust and intake are on the left side. What's the big hole on the right for?

Dave, if I had to venture a guess, I would say it was for the small (gasoline) tank. You would put gas in it and kerosene in the large tank. I don"t know if this was an option on the Super A"s and AV"s or not, but it was on the Straight A"s. HTH,Todd.

The A may've had a vaccum lift. Just a guess. The A I had doesn't have that hole in the hood. I also have the levers for manual lifting of the implements. Hal

In the Fay book on page 35, if you put a magnifier on the very good picture of a SAV you will see that there is an identical hole in the hood with what looks like an old gas cap. I'll bet that is what that is. Wondering now what to do since I don't want an empty hole in the hood. Maybe try to find whatever goes in there and mount it on....just not hook it up.

What goes in there is a tank, a horizontal cylinder about 4-5" dia, about 14" long with a stamped bracket attached, that'll bolt onto the head using the set of threaded holes between the 1-2 and 3-4 plugs. It probably holds about 1 gal of gas. The filler neck protrudes up through the hood and is probably the same size as your main tank filler neck and has the same cap on it.

Don't think I could ask for a better description than that...thanks much! I think the plan will be to find a tank and bolt it in there but not use it, obviously. Then at least the hole is filled. I am not familiar with how this worked and don't have my manuals yet. Was their some type of switch between the tanks or...??? If that is the case maybe I could put it back that way and use both tanks for gas. Keep me from running out!

It's all for the plow. It had a heavy beam with brackets that secured the plow to the tractor. It would pull that 16-inch plow easily
with just wheel weights. I didn't load the rear tires. I even plowed some sod and that made it scratch (slip( some. This was done in 1975 & 1976. The engine was a basket case with the pistons stuck. The sleeve kit cost $60.00 back then. Hal
PS: One of those levers was for lifting the plow and the other was used for tilting the plow point.

That hole is for the filler cap for the gasoline starting tank. The hood is obviously for a distillate or kerosene burning tractor. The tank held about 1 US gallon of gasoline for staring, it had its own shut-off valve on the fuel line which then took the gasoline to the fuel filter bowl under the main tank. The starting tank was a horizontal cylinder bolted to the side of the head above the spark-plugs as mentioned by an earlier respondant.
