Wanting to take a 400 farmall and put a 450 engine kit. Do i have to bore the block, do they have the same stroke thanks

Same stroke, although the 450 crank is balanced.
The late 400s had the 450 head. I think you have to bore it. Oh I think the nut on the end of the cam gear is left hand thread on a 450.

You do not have to bore it to fit 450 pistons in it. The 400 stock is a 4" piston the 450 has a 4 1/8" piston. Just press out the old sleeves drop in the oversized sleeves in and go.

Same block, same stroke, same cam, just order the overbore kit for the 400. Takes you from 4" to 4.125". You will have 281ci. when finished just like the 450. If you have the 362174 gas head on your 400, your motor will be the same as the 450 gas period.

If you look at kits for sale you will see the 4-1/8 or 450 size is what they sell for both engines now. Only thing you need to match up is the piston pin size. 400 engines up to engine serial # 163807 used a rod and piston pin size about 1.31 inch. Later 400 and 450 used a 1 inch pin and a rod with a smaller end and bushing. Buy piston set to match your rod size or use adapter bushings to go from large pin to small, or use late rods. Aftermarket will have sets to fit both without any changes though. Later pistons with small pins that IH had along with the rods were lighter than big pin parts and the engines were a little smoother. Aftermarket and maybe the pistons case IH sells now have piston weights that sometimes don't match the original type parts.

Didn't say in the other post, unless you already have your engine apart. Probably a good chance that the engine already has the 450 size pistons.

If you mean 400 and 450 heads are you refering to LP heads. First LP 400 tractors used the same head casting as a gas. Then other 400 tractors used the head only used on 400 and 450 LP tractors. There was more than one head # used for some fuels, but they were a dirrect replacement for the other # for the same fuel. Have found the same # gasoline heads with matching date codes from 54 400 to 58 450 tractors. Most are # 362174.

No. An early 400 head and a 450 head are different, the chamber is tappered on the one side. I have them sitting on my bench right now and they are different.
