ROPS for 140

I know somebody can help me with this. Thanks to new OSHA regs we now have to put ROPS, seat belts and backup alarms on all of our mobile equipment regardless of age. SO........... I need to know if there is a company that makes a certified ROPS for a Farmall 140. A Homemade system is not compliant with the new regs. My internet searches have been fruitless to this point. Any help or suggestions is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Pete

There is no such thing...

First I've heard that ROPS are required regardless of age.

Is this just for tractors operated by the hired help?

OSHA has no such regulation and if it is a state or local regulation it is unenforcable. Somebody has given you poor information.

Just completed OSHA training for marine facilities in the state of Maine. Required for any facility employing 25 or more.Just tryig to do what they tell me to do.

Depends where he is at, for example:

http://www.gov.ns.ca/agri/farmsafety/standards/tractor.shtml

The Occupational Safety General Regulations (Part 7) require that all tractors manufactured on or after January 1, 1974 be equipped with a rollover protective structure (ROPS) that meets minimum CSA standards. Tractors manufactured before January 1, 1974 should, where reasonably practicable, be equipped with a ROPS that meets requirements set out in Regulations for older tractors.

Here is the legal wording in Nova Scotia.

http://www.gov.ns.ca/just/regulations/regs/ohsgensf.htm

Rollover protection
63 (1) An employer shall ensure that, where reasonably practicable, powered mobile equipment and industrial lift trucks manufactured on or after January 1, 1974, are equipped with rollover protective structures that meet the minimum safety requirements of the following standards:

(a) CSA standard B352.0-95, "Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) for Agricultural, Construction, Earthmoving, Forestry, Industrial and Mining Machines - Part 1: General Requirements", or is certified by an engineer or the manufacturer to provide equivalent or better protection;

(b) where applicable, CSA standard B352.1-95 (R1999), "Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) for Agricultural, Construction, Earthmoving, Forestry, Industrial, and Mining Machines - Part 2: Testing Requirements for ROPS on Agricultural Tractors", or is certified by an engineer or the manufacturer to provide equivalent or better protection; and

(c) where applicable, CSA standard B352.2-95 (R1999), "Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) for Agricultural, Construction, Earthmoving, Forestry, Industrial, and Mining Machines - Part 3: Testing Requirements for ROPS on Construction, Earthmoving, Forestry, Industrial, and Mining Machines", or is certified by an engineer or the manufacturer to provide equivalent or better protection.
Subsection 63(1) replaced: O.I.C. 2000-130, N.S. Reg. 52/2000.

Just where is that as there are thousands of older tractors still used that there is NO system made for them so what are they going to do in that case. If you have a 50yr old car are they going to make you have airbags or how about turn signals on a 39 Ford. Something is crazy about that law. We would like to know where you are located as this is the first i have heard of such a silly law.

Check with your Case/IH dealer. At one time they had a program to sell them at cost for the older tractors. Also Saf-T-Cab made them at one time, not sure if they still do.

Gene- We are in southern Maine. I am the service/fleet manager for marina. I dont make the rules- just trying to follow these new OSHA directives. Pete

Even if you do find a factory ROPS, which will be nearly impossible, it needs to have the OSHA sticker on it. Otherwise, it doesn't count. Good luck finding one with the OSHA sticker still intact.

If you are not misunderstanding the rules, and you do in fact need a ROPS on the tractor regardless of age, your only choice is to sell it and buy a tractor with a ROPS.

Wander if the government is trying to get all the old tractors out of the mix. This would increase sales in their $ sign eyes help the economy. Japan does this with autos, tractors, motor bikes. The inspection old older models in Japan is very high so it encourges people to keep newer items.

wow what will they think of next as if there are certitied builders of a ROPS system for a 50yr old tractor. Where are we going gets sillier every day. Sounds like a new guy on the block and doesent realize that older stuff is around good luck

It sure seems that way. After spending 2 days in that class and asking all kinds of questions the real gist of everything was you WILL do things our way. It doesnt matter what you have- we know whats best for you. I understand that we all need to be safe. No argument there. It just seems that many of the new regulations are very intrusive and nearly impossible to comply with short of replacing many good running pieces of equipment with new models. Sorry about the rant. Pete

Looking at OSHA's web site, I don't see a change. If there has been one, they haven't updated their site. This page:
http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_table=STANDARDS&p_id=10957
says:
1928.51(b)

General requirements. Agricultural tractors manufactured after October 25, 1976, shall meet the following requirements:
which grandfathers anything before 10/76.

Pete, maybe you have been sliding by for all these years on the idea that the 140 is an "agricultural tractor" even though it is being used in a commercial/industrial environment at a marina. I doubt that was ever the intent of the ag exemption. Move the 140 back on the farm and it will be legal.

Looking for other options, I ran across this site. Don't know if they can provide a practical solution or not.

The Kentucky ROPS Guide <https://warehouse.ca.uky.edu/rops/modelrops.asp> lists two ROPSs for Farmall 140s:

Laurin Inc. is located in Laval, Quebec, Canada, and only sells through equipment dealers. Contact a dealer and have them order from Laurin by contacting sales representative Jonathan Arkison at 450-689-1962, ext. 216, or via e-mail at [email protected]. More information is available on the Laurin website at http://www.laurin-inc.com/en/.

NOTE: (1) Always be sure your dealer knows exactly what tractor you have. Ask if there are any variations within your model that determine which ROPS to order (e.g., age, axle housings, fenders, seats, operator platforms, loaders, etc.) (2) Ask about seat belt parts and mounting location. (3) Always discuss shipping costs. (4) Laurin states its ROPS comply with CSA-B352, ASAE-S383, and SAE-J1194 when properly installed with seat belts.

Pete, I saw a ROPS on a 140 from a guy that sells 140's in Goldsboro NC (farmall140.com). Dont see it listed on craigslist anymore, but may be worth contacting this guy for any info. Looked well done, not sure if was homemade or company made.

Guys, check the date.

This thread is FOUR YEARS OLD.

I think by now, either the OP has found his ROPS, has replaced the 140, or is in jail for non-compliance.

Yes, this thread is four years old, and the original poster has undoubtedly resolved the issue for himself. But I found this site while searching for a ROPS for my own 140. Having found three (possible) suppliers, I thought I would share the info. There are still many 140s (as well as As, S/As, 100s and 130s) out there. I suspect (hope) that someone will find this useful.
