Rebuilding the hydraulics on a 450

I am about to rebuild the pump and valves. I see the stock rating was something like 13gpm and 1200psi. BIL's SM has aftermarket pump that he says puts out 2000psi. I would like to find a source for that kind of pump if I am going to spend all that $$$ rebuilding the system. Suggestions gratefully recieved. Would I need to get a stronger driving gear? Leo

Don't think there is much you can do to a 450 pump except replace seals.

The aftermarket pump is probably a M&W or Hydreco. Don't know what they are rated for. Hydreco probably made the M&W unit. I have several of those pumps but have never installed them and don't know how they perform.

I doubt if you will find a stronger gear than the IH cam gear. I am not saying it is strong. Just doubting whether an aftermarket supplier offered an alternate. That gear was beefed up with the advent of the IH live hydraulic system as found on the SM.

If you have a need for more pressure than 1200 psi, you should go with slightly larger hydraulic cylinders for more lift or do something like what is pictured below. Northern Tool has them for around $520 or they can be found in truck salvage yards.

AFAIK, the IH live pump isn't rebuildable... Dunno if it's just the design, or lack of parts, or what... Biggest problem is the seals but usually by the time the seals let go there's a groove worn in the shaft and new seals won't hold either... Time for a new pump.

Unless your pump is leaking or isn't putting out adequate pressure, I would leave it alone.
