WATER IN OIL

I JUST GOT MY 49 FARMALL M RUNNING AGAIN AFTER 5 YEARS OF SITTING OUT IN THE PASTURE. I FLUSHED THE COOLING SYSTEM WITH PLAIN WATER SEVERAL TIMES, AND IT STARTED CLEARING SOME RUST. NOW I FIND I HAVE WATER IN THE OIL SUMP. THE CYLINDER HEAD WAS MACHINED AND NEW GASKET, TORQUED AND RETORQUED. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ON POSSIBLE CAUSE OTHER THAN A RUST HOLE THROUGH A CYLINDER WALL?

did u change the oil in it before starting? did it sit with no coolant ? if yes, the orings posssibly dried out.was the cyl. head done now or 5 yrs. ago? confusing if you done the work 5 yrs. ago or now.

Possible causes are:

Cracked head
Cracked cylinder wall

Is it water in fresh oil? If not, I'm wondering if it isn't just water from condensation that accumulated over all the years that it set. If so, then the o-rings are a real possibility or a crack in the web on the bottom end of the crankcase.

I CHANGED OIL IN IT PRIOR TO STARTING. IT WAS WITHOUT COOLANT FOR THE YEARS IT SAT OUTSIDE. WHERE ARE THE O-RINGS YOU MENTIONED? I DID NOT REMOVE THE SLEEVES AS THEY APPEARED TO BE IN GREAT SHAPE. THE HEAD (AND ALL) WORK HAS BEEN DONE IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS.

THERE WAS A LOT OF RUST BEHIND THE WATER PLATE.

THANKS

Jerry, there are no O-rings to worry about. ScottyHOMeY and Rustred are probably refering to a wet sleeved engine which have large O-rings at the bottom to seal in the engine coolant. The Farmall M has DRY sleeves, there are NOT any O-rings.

One other possibility is that the M and in particular Super M have a slight weakness at the center main web in the crankcase. If other checks fail to show anything you might look into that area for coolant leaks.

yes, thats right, no o rings . was reading and rereading to try and figure out when this work was done. got too occupied in the problem i guess.there must be a crack some where in block or head. did this water appear only after being worked on ? any water in pan from it sitting or prior use?was the head magnafluxed, checked for cracks? no problem with head studs?

I don't think the problem is with the head - I had the head cleaned up well, inspected and dye-penned, then put new valve seats and guides in. The head studs are all good, torqued to specs. That leaves the block.

When I got the tractor there was no coolant in it, so a leak would not have been evident. There was oil in the sump, which was dirty, but did not show water contamination.

So, it was after filling the cooling system that the leak presented itself. But, it did not show immediately, only after running the engine for a little bit.

Thanks

Only the early model m had a frost plug under front cover. The head does have a sleeve in it that rust out though. Under the head bolts with washers on them. Also, some of the head bolts go into water jacket and can leak around the threads. You can see this by checking under the valve cover.

Just drop the pan look to see where it is coming from. Only extra cost is a gasket and knowing beats guessing every time. Chances are you will find a fair amount of sludge in the bottom of the pan you didnt want there anyway.
