i have an IH that looks like it has had the generator removed(brackets and wiring are there but no gen), i was told that it has a magneto but all i see on the distributor is something that very much looks like a standard ignition coil, is that the magneto? and if not where is the mag and why did they (previous owners)remove the generator? and what is that coil looking thing on the distributor if it has a mag? sorry for the river of questions guy's but i'm confused!!

I have run my H, with distributor, for several years without a charging system. I do have to charge the battery every couple months. If you have a magneto, start the tractor and disconect the battery, it should stay running. If it doesn't you have a distributor. It is also possible the the magneto was converted to use a coil. Post some pictures and we can tell you exactly.

so i guess it wouldnt be a good idea to wire in a set of headlights for night use huh??
and the most economical way to put a charging system back into it would be buy a 6v generator?

Does it look like this mag with a coil? It has been converted to a distributor. Hal

You may never know why the generator was removed. There are any number of reasons, some which make sense and some which don't.

Basically, the previous owner was running the tractor off the battery, and recharging the battery when necessary. A tractor will run many hours on a freshly charged battery, and it probably wasn't being used that much, so it wasn't worth the expense of repairing the charging system.

so El Toro being that the generator has been removed and it looks like i don't have a mag means i have no charging system....you think if i keep the batt well cahrged i could run a set of headlights on this and for how long?
