motor oil weights

hey fellas, in an ih 300 it is recomended that you use strait 20 weight motor oil for temps between 32 to 80f. is this what you guy's are using and are there any special recomendations on what and where to buy oil for this tractor, as far as detergent, or non detergent? also what are you guy's using. and what about trani and diff case, the manual calls for one qt of IH torque amplifier lube to every 4 gallons of sae 10w, i'm not even sure if torque amplifier lube is still available?

and is the independent power take off housing, sperate from the tranni/diff housing? and have to be filled seperatly?

just wanna say thanks in advance to the pros on this site who are and have been more than helpfull for a caveman like me!!

Hy tran in transmission and pto which is seperate. Detergent oil in engine, preferably low ash and 30 wt above 32 degrees and 10 wt below that. Of course you can use multi grade if you like, I do in my H's and M but they never see any work just putter around. Far as the 10 wt and TA additive, that has not been around for many many years. That was actually before they developed HY-tran. That additive was retained for some years for a steering gear lubricant and it worked great as it was heavily concentrated with extreme pressure additive. I wish I could get my hands on some now. We used it in the H and M and all the way into the 450 and they always told me it really worked great in the smaller tractors like A and B etc but we didn't really have many of them in this area, or not that I worked on anyway.

I have a International 300u and I work it hard on a 6 ft bush hog. When I use 10w-30 detergent oil, I use 2 qts in AM and 2 qts in PM. Using 15-40 diesel oil, I do not use any. Have been using this oil in my 300u for 10 years.

Hytran in the transmission/differential/TA/PTO, and 15W-40 in the engine. You can use 10W-30 if below freezing most of the time, but not in the summer. 15W-40 is a good compromise. Low ash? If you want to. In those old engines I doubt if it makes much difference. The later engines (6 cyl) may be a little more pickey, maybe not.
