a friend has a 340 farmall tractor , he uses a 6ft bush hog behind it for mowing. This past year he mowed with it one day, and the next day the pto would not turn the mower. He disconnected the mower pto shaft, and the tractor pto would engage, and turn, but when he connects mower to pto on tractor it does not turn? I told him to check rear pto fluid level? but I have never tore into a pto on a 340 tractor. any ideas I could tell him to check into? thanks,Jim

Look up 300 350 PTO adjustment in the archives. I think they are the same unit, and the info will work for that one. JimN

A 340 has an independent PTO so it has its own clutch so it maybe out of adjustment or have a bad clutch etc. The I'T manual explain it well . BTDT and it can be fun to get just right

That is why I have a stack of manuals on my desk about 2 foot tall and I seem to have the good thing of being able to remember to many thing. Plus it does help that I have been posting and read on Y-T for as of March 10 years. To bad some people on the N series forums do not seem to understand the GURU thing and how it goes but that is another story in its self

Is the 340 PTO a dry or wet clutch?

This one didn't just suddenly stop working. It has been slipping for a while, he just hasn't noticed that the mower hasn't been turning as fast as it should.

In a wet clutch system the oil is supposed to protect the clutch from burning up due to slippage. On the other hand if it's a dry clutch, it's probably burned up and will need more than an adjustment IMHO.
