Super A clutch and oil leaks

wobbly cart

My Super A won"t even make it up the driveway anymore because I think the clutch is soaked in oil. Slows/stops movement when I load on the cultivators in the field. The touch control leaks profusely on the outside so I was assuming this was running down onto the clutch somehow. A neighbor says "no way" and suggested the problem is the rear main seal leaking on the clutch. Anyone have any suggestions or experience with this? Is the seal accessible under the oil pan? Is there a half-way reliable way to dry out the clutch once I fix the leak or is splitting the tractor inevitable. If it"s not the hydraulic oil getting on the clutch should I live with that leak one more season till I have the whole winter ahead of me again or is a rebuild pretty straight forward with cleanliness and care? Thanks

I just finished putting my B together after replacing the rear main seal. Not too hard to do once you split the tractor which on these isn't too hard to do with an engine hoist.

You can see I made a stand for the rear half from angle iron and a piece of square tubing. Just drilled three holes to bolt it on.

Here's a picture of the rear main seal after putting a new one in.

There shouldn't be any oil in the bell housing. About the only place it can come from is the rear main seal. The touch control reservoir is more over the torque tube. I would pull the inspection cover on the bottom of the bell housing. If there's a lot of oil in there that's probably your problem. If it's dry I would consider replacing the clutch & pressure plate. Just my thoughts.

I agree with the others, the touch control fluid is not your problem, it is likely the rear seal. I had this on my 140, pulled it apart and replace the seal, dry as a bone now. I did replace the clutch while I was at it.

As the others have said, it isn't the Hydraulic.
If the clutch is soaked, it is possible to remove it, but not reasonable to try to clean it. If just a little oil got on it it would not slip. If a massive amount got on it, the soaking gets into the fibers and the solvent good enough to remove it with 4 or 5 soakings and rinses and such would still leave oil in the fibers. I would just buy a new disk. Check the Pressure plate for worn pivot points on the levers and checking and warpage. Always replace the T.O bearing and pilot bearing as well. Good luck, Jim
