Wheel Color/Paint Code

IH 50 until mid 1949, IH 1102B afterward (1102B is no longer available). Rims were galvanized, I use PPG 8665, others use aluminum, aluminum is too bright.

Aluminum is too obnoxious. Read poor mans chrome...

I used the silver paint that IH sells in the store. This is what the rims are now days and they look pretty nice.

I use Rust-oleum Hammered Silver. It is not real shining. I think it looks almost like galvanize.

I forgot to say, you could go get them galvanized!!!

Get ready for this      and no more of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Galvanized? I don't know about that. I've cleaned both rear rims and front rims right down to bare metal, and there was no indication of any galvanizing, but I did find aluminum paint all the way down to bare metal.

Those rims were made by either GoodYear or Firestone, and the same rims were used by IH, John Deere, J.I. Case, and a few others. Why would the rims that got shipped to IH be galvanized and everybody else got plain steel?

As commented in an earlier discussion, the galvanizing did not come in till about 1943, before that the rims were painted red like the rest of the tractor. Look at any very early Farmall M and Farmall H literature and they show only red rims. Even some of the later advertising showed both painted and galvanized rims. My 1941 W-4 was paint to metal but the 1948 Super-A had originally galvanized rims. After sand-blasting I had them zinc coated by the sand-blasters straight away. The W-4 rims were primed by the galvanizers and I took them home and started getting red on them as soon as possible. I had enquired about hot dipping the Super-A rims but was warned that it would be difficult to get uniform colour and they were scared of the rims deforming in the hot zinc tank

I have a 41 H with untouched galvanized rims. The literature does show red rims, but that was pre-production. I think all rims were galvanized, I have never heard or read of them any other way. You will find many rims repainted red. My 1958 460 had them, along with my unrestored 47 M -- just lazy painters that didn't know any better.

I am wanting to purchase a few items for an Farmall H I just purchased. Could I send you a list and get a quote from you ? I tried to find your email address on ebay but could not. Let me know if this is alright with you and I will get the list together.
