cub engine overhaul

just got a 53 cub and plan to rebuild engine if i can"t get it running with a tune up. i suspect low compression. i have used All State Ag Parts for a jd M and was wondering if any one has any suggestions on a o/h kit sorce. don"t plan to put tractor to heavy work, but want a kit that isnt "chines junk" also cant afford IH part prices. any suggestions or comments will be of great help. thanks, d. coleman(48jd M,51jd B, 49ac C, 53 CUB)
 
Can't say about the overhaul set, but I'd see if Fel-Pro doesn't have a head gasket to fit the application. The last overhaul set I used didn't even have sealing rings on the inside of the gasket at the top of the sleeves. Nor on the oil & water passages.

The Cub uses a non-sleeved engine, which means if the cylinders are worn too much, the block has to go to an automotive machine shop and have the cylinders bored out and larger diameter pistons installed. This makes it rather difficult to buy a "ready-made" rebuild kit, although such kits are available. Might also be difficult to find a kit that is made in the U.S.
 
I'm doing the same thing right now for a '49. I bought my kit right here, from yt. Had it in 2 days. You'll find that depending on the wear, you may end up going .040 over if .020 won't clean it up. .030 is available, but costs an extra amount simply because the mfr of those pistons can charge it.
I had to have the crank turned, guides replaced and since the kit included new valves, I went ahead and had them installed with the seat reground.
Crank grinding was $120. I'll have the bill on the block work by next monday.
