IH 656 hydro

We have a IH 656 Hydro with gas engine. Darn good tractor size for what we need. The hydro trans is getting weak were we have to baby it to push snow. On the low or high side it will slip. Both when its cold and also running warm Both filters get changed every year. Ive been doing some looking around and seen the "re-manufactered" hydros and the cost, core charge, shiping is going to be $4000. Wondering how involved it would be to do this myself. I know splitting the tractor is no problem for me, i got more then enough tools, and a shop to do this. Has anyone rebuilt the hydro before and could you provide some insite on were you got parts from?

Hello, i hope ive caught you before you split your tractor lol. the hydro is a very involved transmission to work on and i only know of a few people that can work on them. the specs and tolerances on them are unreal. There is a place in penn. that works on them ill find the number and post it asap for you. there is also a trans. on ebay usually in a store for around 3k with core exchange. We have a 656 diesel with the hydro. ours went out and we were lucky to find a junk tractor with a good trans in it. i would almost look in that direction. Find one thats beat up or the motors blown and buy it to use the trans. you still have to break the tractor into 4 major pieces to replace the trans and none of its easy. If you have any questions please ask. and good luck

herrs machine 877 525 2875 This guy does super work. He helped me with a Ditch Witch directional boring rig hydro

You could cap the two lines coming out of the transmission on the left side by the spool that is hook to the hydro lever. That will tell you if it is inside or outside.
But take note the foot&inch pedal(clutch) will not work with thee two lines unhooked and caped so be careful.Again Unhook the two lines and cap the fittings coming out of the transmission.

I never considered working on the hydros that complicated. You do need a good understanding of how they work and the repair manual. There are several special tools you will need to do the job correctly and a clean place to work on them is important.

Parts are expensive so a lot of tractors have been retired rather than repaired when the hydro fails. That in turn leads to less mechanics with much experience on them.

I would have no problem in splitting the tractor if it comes to that. I"ll try capping the 2 lines 1st to test. A little backround- rebuilt several vt-903 deisel out of the bradly, Rebuilt +20 m113 angle drives, Lots of prior mechanical work. Just needing to get a repair manuel and a good parts outlet that I would be able to order from

THIS IS JUST MY OPINION,

But I think you're playing right into one of the biggest scams that ever came down the pike.

If it moves, you've got a 95% chance that it doesn't need replacing at all; just a darned good tune up will probably cure it.

Around $750 from IH parts.

Is there a tune up package from CaseIH? I looked in the book and did not see one. If not, what specifically would you replace?
Thanks

I'd first yank the pan and see if there is any excess metal (brass), I mean a LOT of brass indicating piston wear. Those old 656s had some issues in that area.

If not, however, I'd sure be looking at those check valves in the center section. They are the primary wear point and literally get beat to death during normal use.

Also, the forward and reverse capsules up in the control head above the battery will sometimes give trouble.

Even more involved, if the valve plates are warped and letting oil by, they can be resurfaced for a fraction of the cost of a replacement unit.

Like I say, if this tractor is still moving and working, really doubt if there is anything seriously wrong with it. Further, if the tractor is strong in one direction and "slippy" in the other, that is a dead giveaway that the basic tranny is okay.

It's those old guys that can't hardly move in either direction that scare ya.

did mine my self, don't be afraid of it. lot of "o" rings, seals. resurfaced the plates my self too. works fine, great tractor for making hay, bush hogging.

Allan, could you please e-mail me? I had a post on this site about 6 months ago and we tried to get connected but the e-mail addresses never worked. I need to talk to you about the tuneup you are refering to. Thanks.

Allan is right on the money. If you have great reverse but weak foreward or vice versa look at the check valves and the high pressure reliefs. We have a 656D hydro here at the farm that was getting weak last summer I wound up putting in the foreward high pressure relief.
