Farmall 400 Steering

Hello! Have not gotten a chance to tear into my 400 yet but the steering on it is very sloppy. It is going to be my work tractor so will not get a few restoration any time soon like my 300 and SH. On the SH I spent over $1000 replacing all the steering bushings, sleeves, bearings, and building the shafts back up. Dont really want to get through all that right now with the 400. It has a wide front and loader waiting to be put on. Power steering soon to come hopefully. Have heard of flipping the steering gear. Is that possible or very effective? Just looking for a few little tricks to get me by for a few years. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Make sure the two locating collars at the pedestal are snug up againt the pillar, and have both locking screws tight.

If you have already went through your 300, you will already be aware of what you will need to do on the 400. Alot of the slop may be in the nut being loose by the worm gear that is on the shaft. The bearing wears and the nut will need to be tighten.

your 400 should have a full sector gear. you can't turn it over because it has tapered splines. there are six splines so the gear can be located six different ways. the only appreiciable wear is when the wheels are straight ahead so you have six different times to wear the gear out. your ih dealer will have new bearings and bushings.

It has a wide front and loader waiting to be put on. !

Can't tell from your comments if the wide front is on yet.

If you are swapping front ends, the easiest way to get fresh contact on the sector gear is to turn the steering wheel either way so that the flange where the lower bolster was attached is rotated 90 degrees. That should take about 10 seconds or less.

Has a narrow front under it but am hoping to get the wide front next time I am out to the farm (within the next couple weeks). Will turn the gear when I am switching front ends. Thank you!
