Farmall H Stalling Problem

My 85 yr old father still has his 1948 Farmall H tractor from his farming days back in the 50s and 60s. He uses it now to move snow at his northern NY home.He is having a problem keeping it running beyond 5 minutes or so. It starts fine and runs fine and suddenly stalls. After a few minutes, it starts again and the entire process is duplicated.Any ideas what to check beyond fuel and fuel bowl?

My H did the same thing a while back. I discovered that the fuel filter was likely at fault. There was a paper filter inline and it, and the junk in it, had dried out during the Winter to the point that it would not allow enough fuel to pass through. A bit of seepage allowed the engine to run a few minutes but not enough to keep it running. After the engine stopped, gas would trickle back into the carb bowl and then allow the tractor to be started again.

Part of this might have been caused by some rust in the bottom of the tank, too. I fixed both potential problems by removing the filter and applying Red Kote plastic tank sealer. The tractor runs great now.

i have seen them where the inlet on the sediment bowl get full of rust and junk. disconnect fuel line at carb and see if you have a good steady stream of fuel running out, if not work your way back.sounds like the flow is not keeping up to what the tractor is using,so then when it stops the carb gradually fills again slowly and your good till it uses whats in the carb then stops.

you need to figure out first if its a fuel problem or ignition. grab a spare spark plug and run the tractor till it stalls. pull any plug wire, stick the spare plug on the wire, ground the plug and try and start the tractor. you you have a bright blue spark, its a fuel problem. if no spark, look to the ignition system. or, when the tractor starts to die, grab the choke and turn it on and off and see if he can keep the tractor running a little longer by using the choke. that will indicate a fuel problem.

Does the fuel cap have a gauge attached to it? If it does when the cork float goes bad it can cause kind of problems. BTDT Armand

You should check for that fire to your plug asap when it quits running before anything cools.

Be sure to pull the tube fitting where your gas line is connected and look for a screen behind that fitting that may be plugged. Hal

Mike: Tell your father to loosen the gas cap when the tractor quits, then try restarting. Or better yet, loosen the gas cap and then see how it runs. Mine had a plugged vent hole and thus a vacuum was created in the tank as the gas level dropped. Hope this helps.=======Bert

does it have an inline fuel filter? some of those are made for a pressure system and dont get enough fuel flow through them to keep the carb bowl full. I had this happen on my H.

one of the worst problems with a single barrel carb ether up or down draft is icing up on the in side of the carb throat rap with insulation
you can see frost on the pipe between carb and manifold
