New engine knock

Ok...I have been stewing on this for a month or so now...I have been rebuilding my 51 H for three years...it has been completely, and I do mean completely taken apart...every bolt. Engine was hot tanked, crank turned, cam bearings installed at the machine shop, new stepped pistons, sleeves, bearings etc... We fired it up for the first time and ran like a champ...however, there is a light "knocking" sound. It seems like it could come from the gears in the front, or possibly #1 cylinder. Shoot me some ideas before I tear everything apart and more of my hair out...this tractor was my grandpa's and was a complete basket case...we have combined parts from three different H's to bring it back to life... Everything was torqued properly etc... Would a loose gear make a noise like that? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

ould be a timing gear, could also be a rod bearing etc. One way to tell if it is a rod bearing is pull the plug wire on the suspected cylinder. Won't knock nearly as bad if you find the culprit this way. Could also be a valvetrain issue or maybe even the timing is too advanced and what you are hearing is knock.

Is the set screw in the fan pulley in the notch and tightened securely. I have seen a loose screw give a noise similar to what you describe.

Completely taken apart does not mean completely rebuilt. My first suspicion would be wrist pin bushing. Tighter tolerances than anywhere else on this old engine. Have had to tear into literally dozens of these old ones that the owner said was just "rebuilt".

Did you have the cam gear off of the camshaft? It is a poor design. The cam use a RH thread nut that likes to come loose and the keyway wears out on both cam and gear. Later camshafts use a LH nut which has a tendency to stay tight instead of working loose.

Lot of options here. I'd start with a mechanics stethoscope and try to pinpoint the location of the knock.

Yes...we had it all apart...that may be a good place to look. I don't relish taking it apart, but it needs to be looked at. Since we combined some different cam and gear parts, that may be a culprit.

Were the new pistons installed to the old rods without new rod bushings being installed? That's usually a job for your auto machine shop. Hal

Yes, miss-matched gears was one of my first thoughrts. But i didn't hear the "Knock"
