Farmall 140 and Super A final drives

I have done a comparison of the Farmall Super A and 140 final drives and still don't know if i should put a Super A final drive in a 140. The part numbers are different, but many internal components such as gears, seals, and bearing are the same. Should i put the Super A final drive on the 140, or just tear apart a 140 for the parts?

The internals will likely be similar if not the sme, just as you've found. The differences, if any, will likely be external. As an example the Super A drawbar mounts differently than that on the A, so the finals were machined differently on the outside. There may have been similar changes from the SA to the 140, so look over the parts that bolt on to the final drive with an eye to those types of differences.

Gosh, I wish Hugh were here for this one, but I'm going to try.

There was a change in the brakes that may make them not work. The early SA had a brake band with a loop on one end and a rod on the other end. Sometime in late SA or start of 100 production the brakes were changed so the band has a loop on both ends (rod was separate) and a toggle connected the rod to the band. The opening for the rod in the final drive housing was made larger to accomodate this change. Internal parts are the same IIRC. You MIGHT get the SA housing to work with careful use of a grinding wheel. Me, I would find a 140 final drive housing and put it on. Don't part out a 140 if that is all that is wrong with it. Have seen them for sale with asking price of $4500+/-

The later Super A's use the toggle style brake bands, I believe the 140's use the same. The other difference you're likely to find is in the drawbar mounting hardware. I think it differs between tractor with and without fast hitches. Sam

I looked into putting a super A transmission into a 140 and found many parts were different. Different gear ratios, teeth, etc. I concluded it couldn't be done. Swapping the entire rear end maybe a different situation.

Well it sounds like from everyones recommendation is don't use the Super A housing on the 140, probably will end up with some sort of problem along the way.

Well, I am not a Hugh, but, if you use "everything" from the torque tube back...you will be ok. 'Everything".

The housing part number changed between the Super A and the Super A1. With those 2 models, the transmission housing and any internal transmission housing parts that the final drive touches are the same. I hardly see how the final drive is going to care what the other sides of the transission housing is bolted to.

If there are any critical differences, they have to be attaching holes or things like that. If so, changing the whole back end won't make it better. You need to carefully compare the two housings for external differences.

In any case, you would need the later Super A housing for the toggle brakes.

I think they beefed-up the final castings or changed the type of iron due to some problems with the fast-hitch mounting durability.
