setting the timing on a 574 diesel d239 engine

My injector pump startred leaking fuel into the crank cass. I pulled the injector pump off and didn"t move the gears in any form or fashion until i put the pump back on. Now its out of time. Having pulled the pump bsck off i set the timing off the crank at 14 dbtdc. The gear that goes on the pump has numbers on it. The number 4 is suppose to point toward about 7 o"clock looking toward the rear of the tractor. I can"t move this gear to make it line up and my timing still be set right. I found the line up marks in the injector pump and have them set. From what i can see the slot in the gear for the key way would line up with the gear if i could get the gear to 7 o"clock and the timing mark stsy put. I can"t turn the gear to make it line up without removing the front off the engine from the looks of things. help! thanks.

Hi John, if you didn't turn the engine over or moved the timing gears or loosened the cap screws on the injection pump drive gear then the injection pump is installed 1 rev out of time.
Remove the injection pump again and rotate the drive shaft in the direction of normal travel 1 revolution and re-install. Then set the timing via the lines in the injection pump. I have the I&T Shop manual for D-239 in 684. It will be same as 574.

Post again if you can't get it timed.

Good luck

thats the trouble. we removed the three screws. i have a fatal lung disease and am on 02 24/7 and just barely able to get around and i just had some boys working for me to remove the pump. i couldn't get around to see what they were doing and it has been a long time since i had it off and i forgot about the 3 screws. what does the 3 screws screw into. had a real sharp guy tell me what all to do as i stated above, but i don't know what the 3 screws go into and don't know if i can get back out to look at it. i get short of breath just waking 10 steps. i have to put on one sock and wait until i catch my breath before i put on the other one. i appreciate any help. seems like from what i can figure we need to turn the gear to where the number 4 is at 7 o'clock and we can't. is this right or wrong. thanks.

You need to take that hub off that drives the pump and is held into the drive gear with the three bolts. The hub is slotted to fine time. Have your engine on number one compression stroke, set at the 14 degree btdc mark, install pump with timing marks on pump lines up and then install the hub. If you originally removed the pump without aligning the timing marks on both pump and crankshaft pulley you could be 180 out of time. But if you install pump and have gear supported with hub you can turn engine by hand until your mark is at 7 o'clock and if marks on pump don't come around pull pump back out and turn it to marks. Hope I haven't confused you. No reason it can't be timed if it worked before and you didn't change gear setting and like you said you can't with out removing front timing cover. This pump turns at one half engine speed. Some turn at engine speed and have a reduction internally to distributor head like the ambac pumps.

is the gear that drives the pump a two piece deal. i think thats what i'm reading here. like i said i haven't got over in there to take a look and am relying on some guys who have never done this before. got a buddy who seems to think he can do it, but he's more of a jd man and a allis. principal is the same i guess. can't see 10 or zero, but did find 20 and went backwards 3 marks on the pulley to get 14 i hope. thanks for the info.

thanks for the help guys. i'll let you'll kniw how i come out. just got to get over in there to it and lok it over.
