Power Steering Project-Farmall M-Will it work?

Tractor is an early M with a front end loader powered by a pump on the PTO. Would it work to tap into the pressure hose, install a pressure control device to run a CharLyn power steering unit? I realize I would not have full-time PS, but any assist would beat the "armstrong" steering now used. I have a live hydraulics pump that fits ahead of the magneto, but hesitate to use it for fear of breaking the camshaft gear. Any comments-pro or con- will be appreciated. Thank you.

Forget part-time Power Steering particularly on a loader tractor. Do it right with this eBay item currently at $99. You already have the live pump at the distributer. This Behlen kit, plus a couple of hoses, will finish the job.

If there is too much flow, get an adjustable Prince flow control valve for $80 to bleed off the excess. I highly doubt if you will strip out the cam gear with that setup.

Just get a power steering pump from an old GM car. I mount them using a bracket that bolts to the thermostat housing and a manifold bolt, put a double pulley on the generator and belt it across. The pumps are easy to connect to and work great

I put a flow divider on my M, it divides the flow, the first 3 gallons goes to the steering, and the rest goes to the hydraulics, If your not using the steering it all goes to the hydraulics. Works great.

Wardner,

He does not have a live pump on his M so his easiest full time method would be to add an automotive PS pump as mentioned by r4tired.

Do it right!!!! Add the live pump; upgrade the cam gear; and do away with the pto pump!!!!You will never regret it. Do the upgrades than use it and enjoy!! Armand

Harold,

The original author of this thread said he had a magneto driven pump. Probably M&W or Hydreco.

Wardner,

Apparantly I did not read the original post good enough. I basically just absorbed M and PTO pump. Sorry for the miss contridiction.
