Ah..Gremlins in a 340 utility

I just put on my freshly rebuilt carb and ran the tractor for 20 min. or so. The next day I fire it up and go to move a trailer when it dead quits, no sputter, just like a switch was flipped. I am assuming its electrical as I have no lights and can't get the starter to engage even with a charger on it. Battery cables look good. I traced wires to the key and starter button and they look good. I am just perplexed. Help
 
I'll start the guessing game - battery go bad? are you running 6 volt positive ground or did you convert your 340 to something else? if you don't even have lights with the charger on, it could be a bad battery.
 
12 volt conversion 3 yrs ago. I will check the battery today with a tester. Even with a bad battery I think it should still run after starting.
 
You can't LOOK at a battery cable and tell if it's good.

What you need to do is actually take the connections loose and clean them thoroughly with an abrasive tool.

The lights should always work whether the key is on or off. They're hooked up to a separate circuit. Since they don't work, I would have to say that you have no power from the battery whatsoever. That indicates a bad ground or broken cable.

A multimeter to test the battery voltage, as well as the continuity of each battery cable is the next step after cleaning.
 
With everything dead, use the voltmeter on the battery posts to see if you have 12-volts. If you have 12-volts on the posts, go to the cable ends which attach to the posts. If there is no voltage here, your battery terminals/ posts need cleaned/ tightened. Report back with what you find.
 
Hmm are you sure the key didnt go bad...have had it happen.... You should check to see if you have 12 v at the coil with the key on.... then make sure you have spark
 
Would a poor connection cause the tractor to immediately quit after it is running? It was showing a strong charge.
