what do you gentlemen use for a wrench on the water pump packing glands of the letter series and number series I.H. tractors? my old ones are damaged bad . have two nice ones to put on. don't want to screw them up. thanks in advance.

Ah, the brass spanner packing nut! I borrowed a spanner wrench from my brother for mine, but I was considering grabbing a piece of metal from my scrap pile and making something myself with two opposing tabs that fit in the recesses of the nut. That would be better than using a pair of channel lock pliers on it (or a pipe wrench). Those mess things up too much. Good luck.

If the pump shaft drive parts are left in place I have about as good luck with the right shaped bar, if the nuts not real tight. Put it in a slot at the right angle to hold and also contact drive stud, then turn fan blade. Simplist thing for damaged packing nut slots that works for me if nut is removed, is to grind nut flat on two sides so a open end wrench fits. Then when it back on I have a thin open end wrench that fits. Just have to turn the fan at the same time wrench is turned to keep drive studs clear of wrench.

Last year when I replaced the packings in my 400's water pump I used the spanner wrench from my angle grinder to loosen the packing gland nut. It wasnt an exact fit but it was pretty close.
