iv got all my gaskets for my Super MD. The head gasket does not have a "up" or "down" side marked on it. Im assuming that direction does not matter with this gasket then? The gasket is a CNH product if that matters.

Thanks

Andrew

If no "FRONT" marking either, I would place it on a clean piece of cardboard and trace around each (and every) hole. Then I would flip it over and see if it is symmetrical in all aspects. If so, I would put the metallic side to the block. (allows easier removal later) and use copper coat spray on both sides. Let it get tacky to touch, then put it together and torque. Jim

Not sure about that one in particular, but the bigger gas starts say the part number is up. Sometimes they are hard to tell which way is which. And maybe don't really matter without fire rings...

i traced it on a piece of paper and its the same both ways. The gasket does have a part number or some number printed on it and thats it, no other marks. The other thing that is odd is that the gasket that was on it was of steel make up, and this one is a 'paper' make up. I know its not normal paper but its sure not steel. It does have fire rings around the cylinders though.

thanks guys
Andrew

I have the same head gasket to install on my MD when the weather warms up. There is no metal in this gasket and looks to be the same on both sides, so in theory could go on either way. It should have better sealing than the metal gaskets.

Andrew, I wonder who the supplier for the gaskets is now. Any numbers on the gasket? Looked at a couple I have, but there metal on both sides. IH one with 53436DE on it is stamped bottom side with part # on the same side. Have a NOS McCord stamped top with the part # on the same side, also steel sided. With both the outline of the ring around the cylinders is up when installed correct. Never used the type you have so not any help.

(I wasn't sure about fire rings on the little guys.)

We went through this on RedPower and came up with some interesting points about the replacement diesel gaskets.
Metal clad head gaskets are not meant to do the sealing with the gasket body. Fire rings seal the cylinders and inserts seal the oil and water passages. Everything else is filler. The middle layer is actually asbestos prepared in a soft manner. It squeezes easy. Test it with some pliers.

The new suppliers are using a thicker stiffer paper which often keeps the metal bits from compressing properly, often resulting in significant leakage. Several people reported failures with them, so use at your own risk. The end result is the paper gaskets don't seal any better than the metal ones.

Interesting. Thanks for that info. I have the CNH so called "paper" gasket, but am no where close to installing it. Does CNH also supply the metal gaskets, or would I need to find another supplier?

D, it does have a part number on it however its not any IH part number i know of. Ill get back to you with the actuall number latter today.

No idea about CNH. It's my understanding nobody makes the original style anymore.

You guys think MD parts are spendy, try it for the 18s. We thought we had a great source, and then people started popping up with their stories. A lot of disappointments. All of my old gaskets are Victor, with a Victor part number and an IH number, both stamped topside. FP Smith probably has some, but might have to be crossed to the TD6.

In all fairness, I haven't used the gaskets on a size 6 machine. They might be okay. But what we found for the crawlers was that somebody took a template and cut gaskets from a modern material, trying to match the crush thickness. It doesn't work out the same, although they had good intentions. (The guy making/selling them "after market" joined in and we had some good conversation.) Great guy and all, but this engine isn't built like a typical cheapo gas engine and the gasket material is special. Metal clad asbestos based gasket stock isn't available anymore, and that makes it difficult to duplicate.
