when i start my 400 and 450 after sitting overnight both have a lot of smoke at first then clear up then when i switch over to the diesel side they go full throttle then back down to idel. any ideas to what causes this?

Our MD has done that for 30 years never seemed to bother anything though. I have heard several ways to operate them some say switch back to gas before shutting down some say no. I can't say. sure do run cheap. Expensive to work on though.

I switch mine back over to gas when I shut down, BUT MAKE SURE WHEN YOU PARK IT THE DECOMPRESSION LEVER IS ON DIESEL. This will make sure that the decompression valves do not warp when cooling down. It says to do this in the manual and think about it for a little bit and it will make sense.
Mine smokes a little as well. I always figured it was bc of the oily diesel still in the cyl. I know of one other SMDTA that did this as well. Those are really the only two I can remember watching run.

I have a TD18A that does it too. It started doing it after an engine swap and I haven't had time to completely nail it down. It probably means the fuel rack isn't closing off when the engine is first firing up on gas. At low speed the governor is trying to kick in some fuel and the cold oil is hampering it. Have you tried 10W oil?

Susposedly switching back to gas gives cool down time needed to prevent the cracking of the head, or so I was told. I had a chance to buy one years back but didn't have enough "green" at the time of sale. The farmer thought it needed bearings in the motor and rubber all the way round, he got too much for all that needed to be done. My 2 cents......
