I recently acquired an H as my first tractor. SO that means I"m a rookie! I know that there is antifreeze and engine oil. I want to change the fluids. Is transmission differential bull gears and hydraulic pump in the same resevoir? I looked up in the shop manual that it takes 24 quarts of oil. Is there only three fluid types for this tractor? What type of oil should be put into the transmission resevoir?

The trans and the hydro pump are diffrent units. The rearend use 80w-90 gear oil. for the hydro pump use 30Non detergent oil. The fill plug for the rear end is the large plug that is near the steering post support. The hydro pump is filled on the right side while sitting on the tractor. The cap should be a cast mushroom shape, add 6 quarts to there again 30 ND oil. Enigne oil you can use what ever you want i use either 30 ND or 15w-40 oil. That takes 6 quarts as well. The cooling capacity is 4 1/4 gallons.

I would use 80-90w for the rearend should take around 5-gallons, hydraulic is separate from the rearend. I've been told that it takes 30w, 6-quarts for that. For the engine, I use 30w again during the summer. U may want to use something lighter for the winter months, depending how cool it gets where u r.

The hydraulic is separate from the transmission. You should use hydraulic oil or a non detergent 10W oil here. In the transmission rear end use 90 W or 85-120W.

The transmission and differential use the same reservior and the owners manual states SAE 90 weight is the oil used when they left the factory. Six gallons or 24 quarts is the correct quantity. I use the same oil in my H. The hydraulics or belly pump is suppose to use SAE 30 NON-Detergent engine oil. It holds about six quarts per the manual. The dip stick inside the cap is often not with the tractor so you may need to fabricate one and mark the 6 quart line.
You should make every effort to obtain you an Owner's Manual ASAP as there are all kinds of areas which need lubrication you won't find otherwise. The manual is a storehouse of valuable information and are very inexpensive considering the repairs necessary if something is missed. Hope this helps and hope you enjoy your H as it has always been a very popular tractor, Hal.

I'd use any multi-purpose hydraulic oil in the hydraulic pump. Dextron would be a good choice if you have no tractor oil supplier. You can get that at Wal-mart. The books recommend non-detergent motor oil for the hydraulic (Lift-All) pump. But they did not have the oils available then that we have today. In fact, I have several pints of additive that was sold by IH to try to upgrade the motor oil to a spec nearer hydraulic fluid. So even then they knew that non-detergent motor oil was not completely adequate for the hydraulic system.

I use hydraulic fluid as well. NB Cowman is a genius. I have watched him and the crew work at RPRU '09.

My other thought thats makes 30 SAE look pretty foolish is the fact that EVERY implement you hook to will be running hydraulic fluid. Of course the exception would be if you manually purged all of them and refilled with 30 SAE, but that is just nuts. The tractor swaps out fluid with the implement when it is running so all of your 30 SAE will be diluted with hydraulic fluid.

Thanks to all of you for your information and help. I may be back with questions regarding my PTO. Thanks again.
