Anybody know of a source for 22" blades for a 490 disk? I know earth metal is good stuff but at $39.00/ea I was wondering if anybody sells a good quality flat center blade for less money. I would like to put all new ones on, It's a 21 ft., I think I counted 54 blades.

Doug,
The last time I bought blades I shopped around. I talked to the parts-men to see where I could get the best deal and I made arrangements to be there with my truck so they unloaded them right off the semi to my truck. Most places will cut you a better deal when they don't have to stock or handle the parts too much.

Before I ordered blades I ordered just one from each dealer and aftermarket jobber. I took them home and measured them and took a file to them. Maybe not completely scientific, but I felt like I knew what I was getting. I settled on some Ingersol(SP) blades made in Canada and I have been happy. It pays to look around a little.

I found new disc blades for a friends chisel at Shoup manufacturing. I think it saved him about 6bucks a blade. The shipping is free over $200 I think but you will have no trouble hitting that mark.

I've used aftermarket blades before and think the EarthMetal blades are well worth the extra money. If money is tight then go to Shoup.

Have you determined Shoup to be junky? I have never personally used anything from them apart from the misc. stuff like hose holders and what not.

I have used parts from Shoup (tillage and harvest) and think the OEM parts are better at least 3/4 of the time. I would not describe Shoup product as junk by any means. The best set of blades on our White 271 disc are EarthMetal blades and that will be what is going on there in the future unless Case makes the price more than double of Shoup. The strongest part of Shoup's line are some of the 7000 planter replacement parts (fertilizer tubes and bearings).

found out If I buy them direct ship I can get them for $34.50 from CIH, Shoup wants $35 and change. Thought maybe a person could buy ingersolls cheaper. I don't farm alot so I will be ready to trade disks before I wear them out.

I have used them on another brand of disk. They are a little high priced, but I think they are well worth it.

Our local dealers have a 10% off week in February---includes all IH parts. Plus if you ask the parts person if they have a special on over 20 blades, they'll go a little better yet besides the 10%.

The C-IH Earth Metal blades are definitely worth the extra chips. And at some point during the winter and early spring months, they've run a pretty good special on them for years. Ask your parts man, he'll know when the special is coming, and what the discounted price will be.
