Little Genius wheels

If you remember a recent thread, "Plow in a pickup bed," well, I got the plow home, on a flatbed trailer. It appears to be a later #8 Little Genius because it has Plow Chief bottoms and the factory hydraulic lift, with no signs of it ever being a trip lift.

The points, shares and moldboards are in great shape, almost new, but the shins are a bit wore. If anybody has a source for two new shins, NOS, or will-fit, I'd appreciate a heads up, but....

My real question is about the wheels. It has one 16" and one 15". The previous owner told me that he got the wheels on backwards after painting them. He says the 15" wheel should be on the land side, and the 16" should be in the furrow.

Is there a difference? Is he correct?

Tha manual lists the original steel wheels, with the landside being larger than the furrow side (30" landside vs. your choice of 24" or 25" on the furrow side.

If he's running different size cutoffs to compensate for that, he's probably got the right idea, but the smaller wheel/tire belongs in the furrow

This one is on factory rubber, with the stamped steel wheels.

Overall both tires are about the same height... an old 6.00-16 truck tire on the land side, and a 215-75R15 car tire on the furrow wheel.

My genuis has mismatched rims also. Actually both of them do!

I to was looking for some shins but coul not find them. I changed the frogs to the new style.

Could you take a picture of the hydraulic lift? I have been wanting to convert mine. But so far no good pics.

Makes it hard to say, unless you can find a newer manual that deals with the pneumatic tires. (Who knows what IH/P&O might have done with dimensions on the running gear when they switched over?)

If you can play with your levers to get it to

a) run level at your desired depth
b) lift clear for turns when working and
b) transport okay

I wouldn't see the point in switching them. If you were to change out the tires on them, to some recommended sizes, then you might want to look at switching them back across as part of that project.

My two cents.

It original tire size would have been a 6:00 or 6:50 x 16 implement tire on the land side and a 5:00 x 15 implement tire on the furrowside.

The taller of the two, no matter the diameter of the wheel, goes on the land side. This is to provide for more adjustment in order to make the plow level, and all bottoms cutting at the same depth, while making that first, opening pass

try steve smith. recently purchased a 2 bottom 14 #8 from him. he had a yard full of plows, might have what you need. (419) 618-0017, republic, ohio.

For what its worth, my model 70 has a 15" furrow wheel and a 14" land. After repainting wheels I got the two swapped and could not get the plow to level out.

Darn. I just got done backing it under the lean-to and throwing a tarp over it... Should've gotten pictures.

I wonder if my old scanner still works... I have the instruction manual for the hydraulic lift conversion kit that I picked up several years ago, with the intention of copying the lift design if I ever got a Little Genius.

Now it looks like I don't need it, but I'm keeping it for my manual collection anyway.

Anybody know when the Plow Chief bottom first came out?

That'd give me a good idea when this plow was made. I know it's newer than 1951, because my 1951 manual doesn't show plow chief bottoms as an option.
