when repeated forward/back t/c clutch wont engage rev up to grab/sometimes throttle back to grab.
goes up range with load bales no problem dealer say t/c going, repair will be 6to 8k.
i have changed clutches/tranny on gms 3/4 ton is this out of my realm ? where do i get info/ parts help.
sometimes i think it feels more like a valve sticking on m/c unit. any ideas out there great old tractor still doing my job but at that money will have to break her up.

I think you mean TA, as in Torque Amplifier.

If not, what is a T/C? A 986 doesn't have a torque converter, and it certainly isn't a truck camper. Those are the only two uses for the acronym T/C that I know of.

Your description of the problem is very confusing, but from what I can gather, it sounds like it might be the classic signs of a failing TA.

This is way more involved than changing a clutch on a pickup truck. It requires splitting the tractor in two places, and handling the very heavy center section. You may need to remove the cab too. It's really something that requires a shop with a high roof and a gantry crane.

$6000 - $8000 seems a little steep, but that may also include some maintenance items that really should be replaced "while you're in there." That's the main clutch, the IPTO gear, and probably a new MCV valve. All this stuff should be replaced because it will be even more expensive down the line to tear the tractor apart again.

Shop around for the work. There might be a semi-retired IH mechanic with his own shop in your area, or someone else who does work like this on the side for a lot less than the dealer is charging.

I have a 986 and if I was going to spend 6-8k on it I would rather just sell it as is for whatever thats worth. What Im saying is if I spent 6-8k on a 986 there had better be one rolling off a trailer in the driveway. Whats a t/c?

I changed the TA with a rebuilt unit, and clutch for $2000.00 labor included. These rebuilt units are less that $1000. 986 works good now...Darald in AZ

Make sure all linkages are set by the book. Check the selector valve on the mcv and see if it is sticking? Are your hydraullics working ok brakes and steering? I do have parts available if ya decide you need the t/a.

I'd love to know where you find a usable 986 for $8000. All the ones I see for sale run north of $10,000.

It does make decisions easy... They're all too expensive, so you don't buy any, right?

sometimes when you let clutch out nothing happens .
when you clutch again hey preso works perfect.
thanks will check out suggestions.

All mine does is spread fertilizer, manure 3-4 times a year, mow hay, and pull some wagons. So if I needed to drop 8k on it....you get the point.

sounds like the sprag in the TA is worn out. sounds just like our 806 acted before we replaced the TA.

I replaced the TA in our 986 a few years back. it's a much bigger job than the clutch. you have to do 2 splits, then take everything out of the center section (speed transmission). the TA is the last thing out. You don't have to remove the cab, but you do have to support the 2 front corners when you unbolt the cab supports from the center section.

what i'd do is this: split the tractor, put the center section in your pickup and take it to a dealer with a good shop. they can have a new TA in and everything back together in a day. you really need a forklift, trans. hoist, etc. for splitting the center section from the rear frame for this job.

My tractor did the same thing. U need a TA and while your in there don't forget the clutch and P plate I've always put them in myself. You'll need to split it into thirds and build some frames for support If your mech inclined you can do it. Just be careful
