Can a 706D be converted to 12volts? I'm not really familiar with that tractor, but am trying to get some information for my father-in-law.

I don't remember on which series the 12v system was first used, but I believe it was well before the 06 series. So the 706D should already be 12v. If I'm wrong someone out there will catch it. This is a very knowledgeable bunch of IH fans!

706Ds use 2 6v batteries hooked in "parrell", , meaning that the grd of one battery is hooked to the tractor's frame. Postive post of that battery is then hooked to the negative battery of the 2nd battery & that battery's positive post is hooked to the electrical system. The end result is a 12v system.

If the batteries were hooked in "series"- neg to neg & pos. to pos the output would be 6v when using 2 6v batteries.

I believe you got your terminologies backwards there joe, two batteries in line to add up the voltage is in series (think about it) and pos to pos and neg to neg is parallel- same as jump-starting, same voltage

It"s easy to get mixed up. Just ask me. I"m always mixed up.

Parallel. + to + and - to - will not change the battery voltage but capacity will double.

Series. Two batteries connected - to + will double the voltage but capacity remains the same.

So the moral of the story is you could use two 12 volt batteries, but you would have to make new cables or hook yours up differently (I doubt there is enough cable for that)
Personally I would just leave it. Starting problems are generally all about clean connections.

They are 12v and if you have starting problems it normally is bad glow plugs I have had 706D 282 for a long time and when it is hard starting it is glow plugs unless you have weak batteries.
