Farmall M carb studs/nuts

Trying to take the carb off, is there a special tool for the inboard nut? None of my 9/16 wrenches or sockets can get in there more than to turn 1/16th of a rotation. Similar on my H, but there"s just a bit more room.

Would an angle open end wrench work better? Hal

You have to find a cheap thin one, cut it short and grind it a little narrower. Then just remember where you put it, and what it's for.

Aren't we all Farmall Mechanics?? Of course there were special tools to install the carb on "M's" and "H's". The Carb was probably installed on the manifold before it was placed on the engine. We all have adapted special tools to do special jobs, haven't we?

Yes, they will work better. I cut a 9/16" in half and it worked ok, but when I did it the second time I went to the neighbors and stole one of those and it worked A LOT better.

When I was a kid, long before I had short angled wrenches, I used a miniature pair of Channellock pliers. The angle of these pliers was just right, and as long as the opening was adjusted correctly and you squeezed with enough pressure, you wouldn"t damage the nut.

I dont think Ive ever used anything but a regular combination wrench. The trcik is tp turn it ove and flip at the right time to get it off.I tried one someone cut for me and promised it to work, but I ended up rounding off the nut. I do know removing the maifold makes it easy to get to, and once or twice I just waited until I got the manifold off to worry about it.

Rather that cutting the wrench in half I used my torch and bent it in approx a 45 degree angle. That worked ok but I got it perfect when I ground the carb side of the box end wrench down to about 1/2 it's original thickness. Being the shade tree mechanic I am I usually have to pull the carb more than once before I get it right.
