I am about to begin restoring a Farmall B. Unfortunately, the manufacturers plate is missing with the serial number on it. I do have the engine serial. How can I find out what year my B was manufactured with only the engine serial number? That number is 1AB134923.

If the engine is one that B came with from factory it will have the same serial number. The number you have off the engine indicates a 1945. You can also look for cast codes on major cast parts, like the block right below the dist/mag and side of the trans is one too. Youll be looking for a 'O' cast code. example will be - 3 12 O - = would mean that part was cast on March 12 1945.

I have a book that you shows all the serial numbers for the letter series etc. One great book that is well worth the 12 dollars or so is Guy Fay's IH Data Book. there is a list of serial numbers on this site also...

B serial numbers poke here

I saw the link and looked at it earlier, but not having the manufactured serial number it wouldn't help me. What is the name of your book?

The same table appears in two books.

Guy Fay's International Harvester Tractor Data Book (Lots of data -- hp, weights, dimensions and more -- on the earliest IH tractors up to the generation of the 400, maybe 450)

Guy Fay and Andy Kraushaar's Originality Guide - Farmall Letter Series Tractors. A very nice coffee table type book, lots of color, lots of informative narrative about the evolution of the letter series, with useful appendices.

Either is worth having.

Those numbers don"t always match. especially on a 60+ year old tractor. They didn"t always match from the factory. Might have been close, but not always exact.

Rhe serial# for the A,AV,B and BN does not include those built in Louisville in 47 as they started with 200,000 as the previous ones were all built in Chicago till 47 when they were built at both locations

I stand corrected. He probably should keep in mind that it's possible the engine has been changed out at some point though.

There was a B at an auction last spring. I didn't have a serial number reference, so I crawled all over the thing looking for casting date codes.

I could not find a single casting date code on the tractor.

Was the casting date code something IH added later?

This post got me wondering about the B that I am in the middle of rebuilding. The serial number on the seat frame is 214800, but the engine has a part number of 6243 DH, the engine date casting is 7-31-Q and the engine serial number is
M 213352 G with FAB under it. I don't have any history on this tractor but could it have been one of the last B's that may have had mismatched numbers? I'm not sure what the letters mean on the engine serial number either.

Your B was built in Louisville, the last serial was 220829. Chassis and engine serials match through 201000. I don't know what the G is.

The early A's and B's did not have them, or very few, so I have read. Don't know when IH started putting them on most castings. Engine and chassis serials match thru 201000.
