There is an 856 I am interested in but I dont like the transmission configuration. Are these a pain to work with and are they reliable?
 
What don't you like about the transmission configuration?

If you get an 856 in good condition, it will probably last you for the rest of your life with no major repairs, unless you are really trying to farm with it.

There's still an awful lot of them around, in use as front-line tractors on farms, after 40 years. That should tell you something about the reliability.

As with any 40 year old tractor, anything could break at any time, too.
 
Don't like the shift pattern? Most people will say that it is better than the 06 series as many 06s have been converted to the 56 shifter.
Also IMHO, the 56 shift pattern is better than the 86 series also.

With that said, these tractors are getting some age and wear on them and some of the linkage may be worn and sloppy. That can be fixed.

Cam and rollers in the speed transmission can give trouble.
As far as the gears, mostly bulletproof. One of the biggest problems is the loose nut behind the steering wheel throwing on the park lock while moving. $$$$.
Drove one for about 20 yrs.
 
My 856 shifts really good compaired to my 806. Like someone else said, the 56 and also 66 series shift better, IMO, than the 86 series. I own a 806, 856, 1466 and 1486 and like the shifter on the 56-66 lot better that the other two
 
I just got back from looking at it, the configuration is the same as a 66 I believe. Someone told me they only had three speeds maybe thats a 1256. I think Im gonna pick this thing up this week.
 
The only ones that have a three speed is the 1566 and 1586 that I am aware of. All the 06 series and 56 series had a four speed transmission with a TA option. The 856 was a good solid do anything tractor with lots of power.
 
thanks for the help, Im gonna go drive it around tomorrow then if nothing jumps at me I'll probably buy it. I currently plant corn with an 806 or a 986 and would like to get this to plant and do hay work with then I can free up a tractor here and there.
