Ok, so I am replacing my 540 shaft on my 1486. I have all the bolts out of the PTO housing. the housing will only move out about a half inch. Got any idea what is holding it?
Also I see this houing is two sections, I am trying to remove the outer one.
Thanks Ron

Bolt outside back up; remove bolts for whole unit bolted to rearend. need to tilt assembly to rear with piece of pipe so you do not damage pickup screen. Use a lift and chain and an extra pair of hands.

So your saying that both pieces need to come off?
Are there any other bolts hidden besides the 3/4 inch bolts on the rear plate?

Leave the two short bolts in place in the rear part. Remove all the long bolts. There is one more short bolt on the very bottom that goes through the front section only that needs to be removed.

OK I have not found two short bolts. I have removed all the long bolts and the short one at the bottem. Does both pieces come off or just the outside plate? The outside plate only comes out 1/2". The rear second piece seams to still be tight on the tractor.

If the two pieces are separating the tow short bolts are not in place.

The whole assembly has to be removed in one piece. There is a snap ring on the 1000 RPM shaft that has to be removed before the two castings can be separated. The clutch assembly has to be removed from the front of the PTO assembly before the snap ring can be removed.

Good deal!! Any Idea why the rear piece seams to still be strongly attacted to the tractor? All bolts seam to be out. Unless I am missing one?
I was told the unit should just slip out once the bolts are removed. Not that simple

My advise is to take it off the back of the tractor and take it to your local dealer or a good local tractor mechanic. That clutch return spring is wicked,if something bad happen it could hurt you very bad.Taking off the pto unit is easy.Put a clean pan under pto take out all the long bolts around it.The two short bolts leave in,but there is a short bolt in the lower left (bolt is hard to see) corner remove it the pto should come off.

As long as you are sure all the bolts are out the only thing holding will be the gasket. If it was installed with gasket cement it can take quite a bit to get it loose. You may have to tear the gasket apart to get it free.
