656 Fast Hitch problems

I have a 656 that the fast hitch won't stay up. It lifts really good, plenty of lifting power so i know the pump is OK. It will settle down after being shut off for no more than 10 minutes. Even when running with a load on the hitch, it will drop a little and then lift back up to the top again. Any ideas of what i should look for?

Internal leak, probably cyl.Take cover off under seat and observe where oil comes out. There is a drain plug under there to drain that reservoir down to main case, then you can see leak.
 
There are very few 20+ year old tractors that the 3 pt or fast hitch will stay up when shut off.

All of my tractors leak down.One is only 8 years old.

The orings inside start to seep a little until constant bouncing in the hitch results when running.

It helps to lower the hitch at each shut off to relieve the strain on the orings before the problem starts.

Mine have never got bad enough to warrant a tear down yet, so I can't help you there.

My opinion on this is, Most hydraulic systems in the older tractors have or had water in the oil. When unused for a period of time the water settles in the bottom of the bore of the internal lift cylinder causing rust spots and small pits. When using the 3pt the Orings on the lift piston are scarred by the rust spots and then leak. Usually a hone job and new O rings will help but not completly correct. Isn't there a place on the rear of the 656's you can remove and see the internal cylinder.
 
Just worked on 656 last fall. big 0 ring was starting to come apart on 3 point cylinder after all these years. You get to it like pete 23 said. Took a while to find that drain plug he talked about.
