More Magneto ??

OK... If I wanted to replace the magneto distributor with a non mag unit, do I need to do anything to allow for it? Will any unit work (I hope, as I've made a purchase from Ebay. They look very similar, minus the mag)? If the tractor is running on an external coil now, I think I can swap out distributors, make the electrical connections, fire it up and time it... Right? Is the old unit worth anything in it's current non working state?

Thanks, Kevin

It depends on what you've bought. If the tractor starts and runs ok I wouldn't change it.
You should post a pic of the item you bought. Hal

What are you trying to gain or lose? A mag will fire with a weak battery that barely turns it over whereas the battery unit won't fire if the voltage gets too low.

The magneto is not being used in it's original configuration. There is no coil inside the cap. It's using an external coil, so I though I'd clean it up a bit.

I will do just that. I'm at work now, but will post a pic of the current set-up and I'll be holding the purchased piece below it. Both bases are identical... Horizontally mounted. It appears to me to be a direct swap.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Kevin

Total advance, (and if the advance weights are working) is important. It needs the correct springs etc.
A distributor is an advantage in part throttle efficiency, smoothness, and low idle steadyness. A Farmall Mag has no running centrifugal advance capability, so (opinion based on the above) the distributor is better, Jim

What is meant by a magneto dist its either a mag or a dist. Does it have battery voltage to the system now. When you change to a mag you dont want battery voltage to it just a ground sw to kill the mag.

You must keep in mind that a magneto does indeed have a distributor, it needs this to distribute the spark to the correct cyl at the correct time. The other type commenly referred to as a distriutor is in fact a battery ign unit and also has a distributor. The battery ign unit has a variable speed automatic advance whereas a magneto has an impulse induced spark lag for starting and then it is full advance at all running speeds. This is less deseriable for smooth effecient operation at speeds below full throttle. Also, the battery ign units come in many differet advances, from 40 degrees to zero degrees depending on engine designed for. Don't know your tractor model but a 30 or 40 degree automatic advance working properly would most likely be what you need.

If you want retain the magneto in its original state you would need to buy a coil for the mag
and install it. You don't know why it was converted. It could be the magnets being weak.
If the current setup works fine I wouldn't change it. Hal
