H rear wheel casting wobble?

Have a wobble on rear wheel casting on H i bought, have had wedge out & cleaned all, looks OK? axle bearing don't seem to be loose, clamped screwdriver to housing and it seems to be out about 1/4 in. really stands out going down road in 5th gear. is there a trick to getting the wedge & wheel square? or any other ideas?
And its not the rim, it is fine. Thanks
for any advice.

One common cause of a bent asle is a mounted corn picker. I have seen many H and M wheels wobble because of the weight of a mounted picker.

When you checked the casting was it mounted on the axle? If casting was on axle when checked how can axle be bent? I am thinking rim is not centered on casting. put 5 gal. bucket beside tire when it is mounted on casting and axle and spin wheel. Loosen and tightened wedges/clamps until tire is centered. more questions? Armand

it's not the rim it is the center wheel casting is where the wobble is, we cannot get it to tighten up straight on axle, axle does not appear to be bent & bearings are OK, we checked these things. just cannot get it to tighten square on axle? is there a trick to tightening these wedges. we have tried several times. other side is fine. How long have you had tractor? Could axle clamps came loose and caused ware to either casting or clamp halves? Remove casting from and check length of bolts and be sure no slop in casting where it mounts to axle. Tighten clamps evenly each one a little at a time. Is the tire itself in good shape? When all is said and done you may still have a little wobble that is impossible to remove. Have you tried switching tires side to side? Do you have another casting, rim, and tire to mount on that side? Armand

A '50 H I bought had the cast key sheared and out of place but still in the slot of the axle. The wheel couldn't seat on the axle shaft correctly and wobbled. If this is the case on your H, you need a new wheel center. The clamp block AND the wheel center both have keys cast in them to locate the wheel properly on the axle.

Now the '51 H I still have had a bent axle. They can be straightened.

Your use of the word wedges is interesting, there are two parts to the clamp. a saddle shaped movable part, and the wheel casting. Show us a picture, or look at the parts diagram at caseih.com. JimN

It's a clamp, not a wedge.

If you have a wedge, you have the wrong wheel center. In fact I have no idea what you have if you have a wedge.

There's really nothing to it. Make sure the axle and inside of the clamp is clean. Tighten the four bolts evenly and gradually.

Sorry for using the word wedge, i meant clamp, it is a normal H rear wheel, its been cleaned up, grooves & keyways, and when you tighten bolts it is not square on the axle. has a lot of wobble. i have worked on several tractors & this is the first farmall that has done this. just thought someone had a suggestion for getting casting square on axle. keys and keyways are not worn out. Thanks

Genos: At this point looks to me you have only one option. Switch the wheels side to side. If the "bad" wheel does not tighten square on the other axle the wheel casting is bad. If the "good" wheel tightens square on the axle in question you have a good axle and the "bad" casting is still bad. Involves some work but I know no other way at this point. Armand

It would probably be easier to find another H casting, rather than swapping them side-for-side. Lots of Hs were made, and not much demand for rear castings, so they should be plentiful and cheap.

No matter how cheap they are they are not free! Around here they go for about $50. If it were me, I would swap the wheels side for side to determine if it is the axle or the casting. I have had the wheels off two of my three tractors several times and never had any problems getting them straight. I didn't pay much attention to evenly tightening them or all that jazz. Since you have already had the wheels off the tractor you could get them off again very easily. I would guess you could do this experiment in less than an hour. I don't get paid $50/hr so it is worth it to me.

my next move was to switch sides, i know where there is a parts tractor, i can get parts off of if necessary. first one i ever had that was that far off. Thanks to all for your responses. i can still learn something every day on here & in the archives. it will be a show tractor, just looks bad going down the road, and i will be using it for tractor drives. i usually don't loosen the castings if there set ok, only take off the rims when restoring. gene
