26 inch wheels for W4

I am restoring a W4 and want to fit 26 inch wheels (ie hub plus rims)at the rear to replace the current 24 inch cast wheels
Can anyone advise where I might get used 26 inch wheels in good condition
Thanks

Ron,

My I-4 also has 24 inch wheels. I believe the I & W-4's that have 26 inch wheels use the same cast center, but, the 26 inch rims are drop center to fit the 24" cast centers whereas the 24 inch rims were not drop center. New 26" drop center rims can be found from a number of wheel suppliers on the internet.

The wheels are the same for both 24" and 26" rims. The rims are the only difference, the 24" rims are 2 or 3 piece rims as there is no drop-centre and the edge has to be detachable to get the tyre on. The 26" rim is a one piece drop centre rim.
The W-6 had the same arrangement but when they went to 28" and 30" rims they also sued a new larger diameter rim.

Thanks Athol
My wheels are 3 piece ie outer rim and hub will separate from inner and outer rim will separate from outer hub. However the inner hub and rim are all one cast piece as I understand so how to you handle that sito 26 inch rims

Thankyou Harold
My 24 inch wheels are 3 piece
ie outside separates from inside AND
between cast hub and cast rim. However the inside hub and rim are all 1 piece so I do not see how one would handle the inside problem to put a 26 inch rim on

Ron,

When you see the drop center 26" rims, the inside diameter of the "dropped" part of 26" is the same diameter as the inside diameter of the main part of the lock ring 24" rim. It fits the cast wheel the same as the 24" rim.

Are you saying you leave the inside half rim (as it does not separate from the hub) intact and the 26 inch dropped rim fits up against it?

The 24" rims are removed from the cast wheel and the 26" rim replaces it.
I have a friend with a W-4 who uses the 24" rim with industrial tyres on the road and 26" rims with agricultural tyres in the field.
A lot of vintage plowing competitors here in NZ who work with W-4s use 11" tyres on 28" rims for the plowing, these 28" rims have a plate welded to the inside of the rim to enable the rims to be bolted to the standard W-4 wheels. The narrower tyres fit in the furrow, as they often use 11" or 12" plows here, and do not mark the back of the turned furrow

No, just take off the complete 24" rim and tire. The 26" rim and tire will then fit on the cast wheel and attach just like the 24" rim did.The eight clamps that hold the 24" rim fit and hold the 26" rim the same way. Just be sure the 26" rim is a single bead drop center rim. Some 26" rims have attached lug eyes. This type might or might not work depending on the spacing of the lug eyes. However the original type uses the same clamps that attach the 24" rim.

Ron,

You may have trouble finding the correct type 26" rim. I looked on both Miller Tire and on Nebraska Tire and niether one of them have a single dropped center 26" rim available. You may have to find a salvage yard and get some off of a salvage W-4 if you can find one. Why do you want to the 26"?
