48 C Farmall

I have a 48 C pulled the head off had a strange looking piston wasnt flat top and wasnt dome had a recessed dish in piston. Looked at serial number had a D at the end. Looked it up its a 5000 altitude what does that mean. Is the head different than head on flat top piston. Thanks for any help.

I beleive the the heads were the same but the High Altitude engines had the different pistons to increase compression. These were made for operation in high elevation areas.

You may find the head could be different. I know they made a different head for the high altitude Cub engine.
From the description of the pistons they may have been changed, usually the high altitude pistions are the dome type.

Your dished in piston was a distillate piston as their heads were recessed. A used tractor and you never know what you get untill its torn down. You say the serial# had letters should start with letters. You must have seen a casting#.
