Farmall M V8

How much work is it to convert an M to an IH 345 V8? Do the frame rails have to be widened?

I asked the same question about a week ago, and for 450-501 and 478-549- didn't get much response, and not much solid how-to's

the frame rails need to be widened, as the v8 wont fit between the rails. also, you will need to fabricate an engine mounting plate. another area of concern would be the flywheel. depending on how many rpms you are going to run, i dont think the flywheel in the m can handle a whole of them. check down on the pulling forum, chad there seems to be quite knowledgeable in the pullers, i am sure somebody there knows if the mount plates are available or need to be custom made. i 'd ballpark to figure a couple grand to do the conversion with the machining involved.

No you do not have to widen the frame rails just some triming in places for oil filter and such. You use the back engine plate off the M engine and do some redrilling of holes . The flywheel from the stock M motor IF you do not plan on running it over 2400 if you do then the stock flywheel will become a hand grenade and a new BILLET flywheel made out of 4440 steel will need to be made . I am telling you now this is not a BOLT IN deal and ya had best have a really good friend at a machine shop with all the toys for this or a bottomless check book. We have put Caddy engines in them and 460 fords Others have done Big block Chebby's and several 345's along with a 549 in a 706 .

Thanks for the responces guys, truth is I'm an AC guy but I have always liked the looks of the M. Doubt I will ever atempt it I was just curious about it as it is a neat conversion.

there is a guy in newyork with a farmall SM w/350 chevy for sale $2500 that is a way less expenceive way to go even with shipping

Years ago I saw a Farmall M with an 8 cylinder engine, I think it was a Ford 460? The guys that installed it said it fit in easily.
