hey guy's can you jump a 6v tractor with a 12v pickup, or will i set them both ablaze?
thanks in advance for any advice

I prefer to engage the starter then make the last connection. don't hold the starter in too long at a time and remove cables as soon as engine starts
good luck

It is Highly Not Recommended.
Almost any part store sells a charger that is 6 volt or 6-12 volt.
Take the time and do it the right way.
Charge the battery with a six volt charger.

A dead 6 volt battery can explode when 12 volts is put to it.

YES its possible and YES Ive seen batteries BLOW UP when its done.

If I just had to jump a 6 volt tractor and didnt have another 6 volt battery to use, I would JUMP THE STARTER ONLY (where possible) to get it to crank and let the in place 6 volt battery power up the ignition as/if needed

Keep polaritys the same !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Be careful

I bought my 6v/12v charger at orscheln for 30 bucks and it is much safer than trying to jump a 6v with a 12v, You can however jump the starter directly with 12 volts you just have to keep the polarity right, have the ignition on, keep it in neutral, and let someone know you are going to do it because someone else will have to call for help as you will have been run over by your tractor if you knock it in gear.

If you do jump directly to starter triple check to be sure tractor is not in gear. Have seen battery blow up but have seen tractor start up in gear when starting from ground more often, had nieghbor pushed through back wall of shed few years ago---DOA.

really hate asking dumb questions. This might be one. IF the jump is done to the starter (cables & sparks not near battery), polarities correct, and only remains connected for starter motor run-time, then what causes/ignites/initiates the battery explosion? :?

just pull start it with your truck, or have a friend push the tire and pop start it in 5th gear

Never connect across the 6 volt battery. If you cannot jump directly to starter with out impressing the 12 volts to the 6 volt battery or components don't do it. It is a rare 6 volt tractor that uses a solenoid operated starter but if it does you would be impressing 12 volts to system by jumping at battery side of solenoid. If you can hook directly to starter you may back feed 12 volts through pull in winding to hold in winding so that is not recommended. You would need to disconnect starter strap from solenoid. Some use a magnetic switch mounted on the starter that is often called a solenoid but is not. You can safely jump direct to starter side on those. Remember, you are relying on the 6 volt battery for ignition unless you have a magneto. Safety first. Sparks will be flying where you make your last cable connection

(quoted from post at 13:24:06 01/10/10) Another good reason to convert to 12 volts.
Another good reason to own a 6/12 volt charger...

Does anybody think "Big Rich" will ever come back or has even read this thread??? I really doubt he will let us know what happened.
