opinions on M wide fronts

I currently have a plain old 1950 M narrow front that is mostly my pull a trailer tractor.I have a friend that's looking to get rid of a decent loader that I was thinking about putting on this tractor and swappin out the narrow front for a wide front end.I have no experience with the wide front ends.I've seen a couple post mentioning different style front axles.Which is the strongest? What would be a reasonable price for one? It would be mostly used for loading and unloading 4'x5' round bales maybe once or twice a year instead of movin another tractor,is that kind of weight capable with the wide front?I've also heard they make them very hard to steer, but like I said I've no experience with them I'd like to hear what you guys have to say about them. Thanks for your time.

We have a 400 with a narrow front end and had a bright idea to put a wide front on it. Even without a loader it was hard to steer i cant imagine having a loader on it and then even trying to pick up a round bale. That wouldnt be for me unless you put power steering on it.Then im not to sure it will pick up a round bale. We put the narrow front back on the 400. Erik..

depending on the loader round bales shouldn't be a problem for your "M". Wide front would be nice but narrow front can work, but not good in the mud. The problem I had on my 450 was keeping the 3 bolt front wheels tight while carrying round bales.

Unless you will be working in mud, I would stick with the narrow tricycle front. It will steer easer and is much more manuverable.

I have an IH wide front under my MTA, I us 8' snow scoop the front end has given no problem, power steering is a must have unless you are strong enough to go bear hunting with a willow switch.

Thanks guys for all the input.Unfortunately mud is exactly where this thing would probably be.Anyone have an idea on what a good wide front is worth?

every wide front ive ever run wasnt hard to stear at all. actually, it was kind of easy to run. a wide front m will pick up round bales but it will be a little wobbly if u dont put some weights on the rear tires.

What do you use to move the round bales now? If you're using a modern tractor with wide front end, power steering, and two-way loader with hydraulic bucket, you'll be taking a huge step backwards with an M. Even if the tractor is green, blue, gray, or a different shade of red.

Were currently using a new holland tc45 to move them. Its at our farm where no one lives at about 15 miles from my house. So I have to move tractors because its my only loader tractor.I agree itd be a huge step back as far as convenience, but I already own the M and can't justify purchasing another $20000 tractor that'll get used maybe 20hrs a year.Especially if I can get by with converting the M($600 power steering,$500 wide front,$300 live hydraulic pump, and then the loader which I'm trading an old baler for)for less than $2000 hopefully, when its all said and done.I guess I'm kinda tight.lol Thanks guys for all your input I'll be posting some pics when I get it all round up and have time to get it all on the tractor.
