Clutch on a 606

I just bought a new clutch disc and pressure plate
for my 606. When I took it apart there were flat
washers acting as spacers between the pressure plate
and the flywheel. I am not sure why they are on
there but I was asking everyone out there just for a
few pointers as to how I should reassemble the whole
clutch system. I have tech manual but the one I
have is not too clear for me. Thanks - Joe

I was having pedal clearance problems on my 460 (same clutch I think). I tried the washer thing -- it did not help. The problem is worn linkage. Too much play in the linkage before the release bearing contacts the fingers, meaning there is too much play in the pedal. In order to get it to work properly, the fingers are against the release bearing all the time at full throttle, not at idle, meaning centrifugal force forces the fingers out -- will probably eventually ruin the bearing. As to installation, you need to get I&T manual IH 25. The TA has to be adjusted at the same time as the clutch, I&T is better in that regard than the IH clutch manual. When you install the clutch and push the tractor back together, do not attach the pressure plate and disk to the flywheel until the tractor is back together. Unless you have perfect alignment, you will bend the clutch disk, I learned that the hard way. To answer your question, the washers were there in an attempt to get the clutch to fully disengage to prevent gear clash when shifting, if I remember right. Best to leave them out. Also, you may need to get the flywheel ground. If the previous owner did not have the machinest take the same amount off the step on the flywheel as he took off the surface it messes things up. I forget the correct step height. You will find it at www.hicapacity.com

Thank-you for the information it is helping alot! I left the washers out between the pressure plate and flywheel and now bolted it in loose so that when i put the motor onto the tractor I have some play with the clutch disc. I was also wondering however, in my manual, the IH 25 one, there is a section about adjusting the release fingers on the pressure plate to a specific height. I was wondering if i do that can I mess that up because there is a black glue on each set screw on the pressure plate? Anyhow thanks again!!
