656 3pt lift problem

Good morning, just looking for some help figuring out why my 3pt won't lift a 1500lb round bale? Modified a set of forks to fit the 3pt, unit goes up and down. Front end loader, TA, and steering work fine, I understand there are 2 pumps on this tractor, can I adjust the pressure for the 3pt? If so, where is that located? Thanks, Steve

There is a plug near the top lift arms or at least it looks like a plug but its a relieve valve or a bypas valve, anyway it unscrews very easy and you can replace it with a valve from a 886 or a 986 i think if i remember right the 656 is set at 1800 pounds or 2000. But the 886 is set for 2200 and the 986 is set for 2400. They are all the same looking plug and i changed mine to an 886 and it made the loader lift a lot more than it used to. You can check it out at your case IH dealer.

Is this located above the spools for the hydraulic controls on right side of seat, inch and 1/8 head? I unscrewed this yesterday, it broke free and started to come out about 1/2 inch but I didn't know for sure if that was the bypass or not, I assume there is some sort of O rings or detent inside? is this correct, and is it ok to go ahead and pull on it a little to get it out? Thanks Steve

Steven, the relief valve Erik is talking about is for the remotes. The hitch relief valve is under the square plate under the seat assembly. The way that hyd system is plumbed up is that the hitch pump adds to the remote/steering pump when the hitch is not in use, but NOT the other way around. The relief valve is factory adjusted at the factory and staked to make it NON adjustable.
Some thoughts
when has the filter and fluid been changed?
worn out hitch pump?
water/ice in the fluid?
3pt linkage adjustment?

Just changed the fluid and main filter, Is there another filter? Had water in fluid and this is just about impossible to get out, added isopropal a couple of times and cracked off water after its had time to set but still a battle. I have the forks mounted directly to the arms with hydraulic top link, don't know how else I could adjust to get better lift? Pump seems pretty quiet and I have a 1000# 3pt counter weight that it lifts no problem. Thanks Steve

Steven,
The relief for the 3pt. is under the square plate under the seat as Tractorman said. Remove the seat & cover. The hitch relief is in the right front corner. Try to lift a bale & see if oil comes out the top of the relief. If it does you can screw the slotted part of the valve in to raise the pressure. Try a 1/4 turn at a time. Have done this many times to raise a heavy planter with no problems. Just go enough to raise the bale. If the valve does not leak when trying to lift your pump is probably weak.

Ted, my 2606 has hydraulics like the 656. That slotted bypass valve in the right front corner of the rock shaft housing was factory notched into the threads so it wouldn't turn. I tried. There was also another bypass valve in the block on the outside and right side of the housing. Its a flat/low looking bolt head that takes about a 7/8 or so socket. Easy to strip and mine was already stripped so I got it with an impact wrench.

One for each pump. I think the inside one was fed from the block on the front at the right front corner of the housing.

If he pulls the plate off the housing, lift it straight and don't burger the gasket under it.
